    CuePointNames with foreign characters

    SpriteLab Level 1

      Updated an application to Director 11.5 and have some problems with danish characters in the cuepointNames.

      The application have worked the last 5 years, but now it behaves really strange.

      I've tried to set the codePage when Updating movie to several different  tables, but still the same problem.

      I can't even change the name myself, 'cause there's a difference between whats in memory and what it shows in the variable.

      Does anyone have any idea what's wrong ?

      Thanks in advance

      cheers

          When you create a new movie in D11.5 using the same SWA file, do you experience the same problem? That might help to narrow down whether it's a problem introduced with the "Update Movies..." process or something particular to 11.5

            Hi !

            Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it this morning.

            I created a new movie, totally empty except  the swa member. It's the same.

            I also created a new swa member. Same result.

            I converted the sound to swa in Director 11. Same result

            If anyone is interested in testing the result on thir system I would appreciate it.

            The cuePointName is : "køber". Thats 5 characters where number 2 is a danish "o" with a sort of backslash over it :-)

            (I'm just writing it here 'c ause I don't know wheter this forum thread  looks right on your computer.)

            What it puts in the message window is "kk" which makes no sense at all. At least to me, that is.

            Thanks agin

              Hi John,

              I took a look at your file and I see the same thing as you (the cuePointName reported as "kk") in D11.5 on Windows XP SP3. When I create the same file using D10 the name is "køber" as expected.

              It looks to me like a bug with 11.5 (and perhaps/probably 11) and should be reported to the Director team

                Hi Sean !

                Thanks for testing. Sadly it seems there's no work around.

                I send it to the Adobe support team, Well actually that was where I started, when they suggested that I should try it out here.

                Now I'm back to square one :-)

                Unless there's another place to report bugs than the "Customer Support Portal" ?

                Thanks once again for your effort on this

                  You could email allenp@adobe.com directly and provide identical D10 and D11.5 files so that it's immediately apparent what's wrong.

                    Thank you. I sent it yesterday evening(Danisgh time).

                    I certainly hope it will help. The whole app is stalling because of this

                    I hope this can be fixed by a patch and I don't have to wait for the next update or release....

                    Cheers

                    John

                      You really should seek a workaround or alternative to what you are doing. Life's too short, and development time too valuable, to wait for Adobe to fix something. They have a very poor track record in this regard.

                        Well I don't disagree with that. But what's the system/logic in a word like "køber" ends up in "kk" ?

                        The workaround that seems obvious, is to rename the cuepoint "køber" to "koeber" in the wav, convert it to swa again, and then change "oe" to "ø" when getting the word from the cuepointname via lingo.

                        Piece of cake.

                        Except that there's 5 years of work with sentences. Which might be aprox 3000 sounds. And youcan't really make a batch job that'll rename a cuePoint in SoundForge. At least what I know.

                        Haven't got any other ideas... :-(

                        I might try to insert all sorts of cuepoints with foreign characters to see if I can find a pattern.

                        Thanks again for responding

                          A little further analysis shows just how wrong Director/Lingo gets it. I amended your movie script to

                          on startMovie
                            mem = member(1,2)
                            mem.url = "@/udtale_fokus.swa"
                            mem.preLoadBuffer()
                            mem.soundChannel = 2
                            play (mem)
                            cp_names = duplicate(mem.cuePointNames)
                            len = cp_names[1].length
                            put cp_names, len
                            repeat with c = 1 to len
                              tChar = cp_names[1].char[c]
                              put tChar, charToNum(tChar)
                            end repeat
                            jsCharCodes(cp_names[1])
                          end

                          and added a JavaScript syntax function to a new movie script:

                           function jsCharCodes(str) {
                             var len = str.length;
                             trace("length: " + len + " " + str);
                             for(var i = 0; i < len; i++){
                               trace(i + " " + str.charAt(i) + " " + str.charCodeAt(i));
                             }
                           }

                          and I get the following output in my message window:

                           -- ["kber"] 2
                           -- "k" 107
                           -- "ber" -1
                          // length: 4 kber
                          // 0 k 107
                          // 1 b 98
                          // 2 e 101
                          // 3 r 114

                          Note that the 3rd line above ( -- "ber" -1) displays in my message window as ( -- """ -1)

                            Here's a possible alternative. I'm guessing you're using swa files so that you can stream them. If you can get them locally (because yours is an off-line app or you can preloadNetThing() them) either before playing them or before you need their cuePoint data, then you can import them as well as setting member.url. The imported member shows the correct cuePointNames. Do you understand what I'm suggesting, and is it a feasible workaround?

                              The application is a shockwave running in a browser. I understand what you're suggesting, but I think that the time it takes before the file is preloaded and imported before anything happens will be too long.

                              You can see it in the last updated version here: http://sproglab.dansk.nu/sproglab_2010.htm?lektion=lydsetup_endelser_e_1&folder=filupload/ udtale_endelser_e_1

                              Remember the sentences with æøåÆØÅ in bold font will stall the app.

                              But I might have a look at it later. Thanks once again

                                'cause I haven't heard anything from him yet.
