Space Between Tables For No Good Reason

    amber6177

      Hey everyone.

I sliced up my web design in Photoshop and imported it into DW.  So far, so good.  Everything looks perfect.  Then I inserted a .swf into one of the tables and started to see a little bit of space between my tables.  Since the .swf was the same size or slightly smaller than the space it occupied, I have no idea why this happened.

To make matters worse, when I made my navigation text into links, I got ugly blue outlines around them and even MORE empty space between my tables!  I didn't move anything, but the space just keeps getting worse!  Does anyone have any thoughts?

      Screenshot below and code here:

Most people here who use DW will tell you its a bad idea to export tables from Photoshop for many of the problems that you are encountering.  The blue links can be removed from your page by adding the following CSS code:

          a img { border: none; }

By removing the border you will no longer see the blue around your image links.  As far as the spacing it is difficult to judge because of the mass amount of tables.  For instance, the colspan="21" is really crazy to think that your flash image is taking up 21 columns of a table and makes finding this information difficult to sort through.  And based on the width of your table (1000px), your row is 2px too large, 34+32+936=1002px.  I would highly recommend looking into learning CSS ( good tutorial to start --> http://www.w3schools.com/css/ ).  Because you can easily reduce the size of your page and clean up a lot of this code and make it easier to edit without all the tables.  It is well worth the investment and there are a lot of people here to help you get started.

Thanks for responding.  I did what you said and took out the borders around the linked text, which thank God fixed the problem lol.  I still have spaces everywhere, though.  The real problem here is that I went to school for Graphic Design, not Web Design, and at least at my school they never even touched on things like this.  I'm willing to learn, but I'm on a time crunch.  Basically my boyfriend did not want to pay for someone to design his page for his business, so he asked me to do it in a ridiculous amount of time.

Enough whining, though.  I'm reading up on some HTML code from the site that you gave me, but was wondering, if I post a link to the page directly, could anyone point me in the direction of what's causing all this ridiculous spacing?

              Yes.

http://www.on-sitevisualizers.com/osvmain.html  That is the site.  None of the images or .swf are showing up -- no idea why, but I suspect it's because I'm a novice.

They're not showing up because they're all pointing to your hard drive on your local computer (which no-one can see but you).

                  e.g.

                  <img src="file:///C|/Documents and Settings/Brian  Haynes/Desktop/Amber's Folder/SiteForPhuong/SiteForPhuong/images/osvmain_02.jpg" width="34" height="999" alt="">

This is often because a site has not been defined in Dreamweaver so DW does not know where the web site is in relation to the images on the hard drive so it has little choice but to directly link (locally) to the image on the hard drive.

Have you defined the site in DW?

I defined the site in Dreamweaver and looked up how to upload it, but I can't get the site to connect to GoDaddy's FTP server.  No matter what I do, it refuses to connect.  GoDaddy advised me to use their file manager instead, but it still doesn't work.

                    Local Info:

                    Site Name: OSV

Local Root Folder: C:\Documents and Settings\...etc.

Default Images Folder: Same as above

                    Links relative to Document

                    HTTP address: http://www.on-sitevisualizers.com

                    Enable Cache

                    Remote Info:

                    Access: FTP

                    FTP host: http://www.on-sitevisualizers.com

                    Host directory: left blank

                    Login and password

                    Use passive FTP

                    Use Firewall

                    Maintain sychronization info

Automatically upload files to server on save

Whenever I test the connection, I get this error message:

An FTP error occurred -- cannot make connection to host.

No response from the server.  This may be due to one of the following reasons:

                    - Accessing the server requires firewall settings that aren't properly set.  Please verify that the Site settings in the Preferences dialog box are proplerly set and that the Use Firewall option in the Site definition dialog box is selected.

                    - The server may be accepting only passive mode or only active mode.  Toggling the "use Passive FTP" selection may help.

                    - If you are connecting to an IPv6 enagled server, please select the appropriate selection.

                    - Your local firewall may be blocking the incoming FTP data.

                    - It is possible that your FTP may be using a non-standard FTP port (21).

                      FTP host: http://www.on-sitevisualizers.com

                      That's the website address.

Is that also the exact FTP address given to you by your web host for uploading files? They often start with "ftp".

Note: the FTP connection issue is a separate issue to your file paths being wrong in your code.

I honestly have no idea.  The only way I can even get it to momentarily connect to the site is if I use the actual website address with no ftp.whatever.  I've read tons and tons of suggestions but it seems a lot of people are having problems with GoDaddy vs. Dreamweaver.

                          John is correct.

Your site config of FTP host: http://www.on-sitevisualizers.com

is not correct. The ftp connection string should not contain the protocol. And of couse, http is a completely different protocol than ftp anyway. If you don't know the correct ftp host, try on-sitevisualizers.com.
