The image is redisplayed in its approximate printed size, as specified in the Document Size area of the Image Size dialog box. The size and resolution of your monitor affect the on‑screen print size.

John Joslin Mar 8, 2010 10:37 PM (in response to Paul Cracknell)If you really want the exact size displayed on the monitor (although I can't think why) you will have to jump through a few hoops.

Zeno Bokor Mar 9, 2010 2:12 AM (in response to D Fosse-QDEaQ1)For a 1680x1050 monitor, measure the length of the displayable area of the monitor in inches (as in, without the bevel and all that) and then divide 1680 by that amount and you'll get the resolution in Pixels Per Inch of the monitor which you'll then have to enter in Edit->Preferences->Units&Rulers, Screen Resolution section.

D Fosse-QDEaQ1 Mar 9, 2010 2:49 AM (in response to Zeno Bokor)Yes, it was something along those lines I had in mind; but that entry in preferences only affects the document resolution of a new document. It doesn't do anything to the size on screen.
To display at accurate print size on screen, you'd need to adjust the display zoom ratio very precisely. Even the navigator panel doesn't allow that precision.
Apparently there is something hard-coded into Photoshop that allows for any odd zoom level when you hit "Print Size", but that seems to assume an "average" monitor resolution, and will probably give the same zoom ratio no matter the monitor resolution. It has to do that, since it's usually wrong. Is there any way to adjust that?
Or am I missing something really obvious here? I have a feeling I might be

Zeno Bokor Mar 9, 2010 3:21 AM (in response to D Fosse-QDEaQ1)The Print Size command uses the Screen Resolution field from Preferences->Units&Rulers as the resolution of the monitor

D Fosse-QDEaQ1 Mar 9, 2010 3:36 AM (in response to Zeno Bokor)Yes, you're absolutely 100% right, Zeno. That's where Photoshop picks up the number.
For my 22-inch 1680 x 1050 (which is a fairly low resolution), the sizes match perfectly at 90 ppi.
Not really a big deal as John says; but nice to know nevertheless.
