When you say stretch, do you mean vertically (down the page) or
horizonatlly (across the page)?
I'd like it to stretch in both directions.

You can repeat it horizontally by using the CSS repeat-x attribute in a background rule:
Vertically (down the page) the usual approach is to make the image dimensionally greater than 2 or more screens in height but very narrow
e.g. a 5 pixel wide x 1500 pixel high image. This keeps file size to a minimum with maximum screen coverage.
John - Thank you very much! Exactly what I was looking for! I'd seen the narrow backgrounds before, but hadn't understood what to do with them.
By the way, in CS4 (maybe earlier versions), there's a choice right underneath the "background image" called "repeat". With your hint to point me in the right direction, I just made the appropriate choice there and everything works.
