Did you mean Live Trace from the Object menu?
I can't even live trace. All I can do is move the picture around the art board
when I live trace, nothing happens
Did you Select the scan with the Selection tool before trying the Live Trace?
Yeah. Is using the Pathfinder too an option? And is there a way to unlink the file or does the file HAVE to be in bitmap in order to manipulate fully?
Live Trace works on bitmaps but the file must be embedded. What format did you save the file in?
I actually just figured it out. I didn't have the file saved as a PSD. before
I placed it into Illustrator. Then I was able to live trace and it worked! Thanks for your help Larry
Let me straighten this out andclean this up as well.
1 The file can b linked or embedded
2. it can be a jpeg, tiff, psd, gif, (linked) photoshop DCS, etc.
3 You need to expand the live trace in order to recolor or edit the paths.
Now what you were doing to make this happens as you describe is interesting but I am certain it is user error.
Again the question is what format did you use to save the scan?
BTW I want to make certain everyone that reads this thread know by making it a psd is not the correct answer and yu need not do this if you elect not to.
Okay, so looking back on this, I realize that I did things completely backwards. I really appreciate the help guys!
To answer your question, I scanned in my picture using fax and scanner wizard my piece of junk Dell scanner came with. I can't remember the format I saved it as though. Once it was on the computer though, I re-saved it as a JPEG.
Even after taking a class on this program my first quarter of college, I didn't realize that you had to expand the picture after live tracing
It has to be expanded and you can choose the option to trace and expand.
Some of the participants answering the question on this thread did not mention it as they are working with older versions of AI
and were not aware that this might be the problem.
You can expand this in three ways as you notice I usually just expand but sometimes expand as a live color group.
If you go to the Object>Trace>Live Trace Options you can choose color, grayscale or black and white.
With color you can choose the number of colors, and an option to ignore white making white transparent.
Look at the tutorials about Live Trace
I was wrong I think Larry has CS 4, I apologize Larry I read a different name.
Okay cool. I have so much to learn. I just needed to figure this out before finals are due next week. Thanks again
