    Cartoony look

    Level 7
I believe there used to be an extension to give a photo / graphic a cartoon
look... anyone know if this still available and importantly what it would
be called and where it would be available.... tried googling but that didn't
      give me any clues :-)

Actually not sure if it's a cartoony effect exactly and I should have posted
an example... here's something that describes the look I mean....
          http://www.oswd.org/design/preview/id/3685
That's probably hand drawn but I'm sure I saw an extension that did
          something similar....

            Hi Nadia,

There are several, but none really do the trick for me. The one I do use is
Ilyich's Simplifier, http://photoshop.msk.ru/as/simplifier.html to get me on
the right track. But for the one you uploaded I'd probably start from
scratch with the trusty pen tool, using your pic as a guide.

Nadia - have you checked out the free filters from Cybia - they do some
funky stuff - lots of presets to choose from and each one fine-tuneable??

In particular colorworks gives some nice effects.

I tend to agree. While my filter will do funny things to images with
certain level of detail, it is quite likely to do bad things to long
smooth gradients. So under many circumstances pen tool will work better
(obviously, for many others it will be more time consuming than the
filter). Well, after all, nobody can stop the user from using both, if
necessary - run the filter on detailed parts, then quickly draw some
simple shapes over big smooth parts.

                  Thanks guys,
I'll take a look at the extensions. As for trying to use the Pen tool,
                  forget about it ! :-)
We just don't mix well together.

There are other types of pen tools - not all of which are as demanding.
Maybe a feature request would be helpful?

Well, I also don't mix well with drawing tools (and I do not mix at all
with painting tools, that's why I prefer using math rather than drawing or
painting skills), but in many cases Pen tool work best. I would like to
avoid using it, but, unfortunately, proper (proper from a "human" point of
view, I mean) image "segmentation" and gradient reconstruction is
something even the expensive software can't really do without human
participation. Probably, someday we'll have the software capable to do the
job you are interested in without any human input, but well, we all know
what happen next - this software will launch missiles on Russia, and then
Arnold will start shooting people :-)
