    Can't update Windows Reader v9.3 to v9.3.1

...Running Windows XP Pro SP3 with all critical patches applied.  Installed Adobe Reader v9.3 without a hitch. Using built-in "Check for Updates..." or downloading standalone updater for v9.3.1 (CPSID_50570) fails during installation.  For the built-in updater, I get "Adobe Reader 9.3.1 (CPSID_50570) failed to install."  With the standalone updater, I get "No valid sequence could be found for the set of patches."  Both mechanisms generate an error in the Windows application event log:

      Event Type: Error
      Event Source: MsiInstaller
      Event Category: None
      Event ID: 1024
      Date:  3/22/2010

Product: Adobe Reader 9.3 - Update '{AC76BA86-7AD7-0000-2550-7A8C40000931}' could not be installed. Error code 1648. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with installing software packages. Use the following link for instructions on turning on logging support: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23127

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Following either link doesn't really get me anywhere.

I found similar threads which suggested using Microsoft's "Windows Install Clean Up" utility after removing Reader, then re-installing and attempting to update...no joy.

      Help, please.
