1. Re: Indesign fails to update links 70% of the time...
Tom Usrey Mar 24, 2010 11:07 AM (in response to John Nez)As far as turning off the Hyphenation -- as with most Preferences, just uncheck the Hyphenate box in the Paragraph panel with no documents open. Any new documents after that will not hyphenate text. For existing documents, you'll need to do this to each one in order to reset the Preference; in addition you'll need to select all text frames and unclick the Hyphenate box to apply the setting.

Peter Spier Mar 24, 2010 11:18 AM (in response to John Nez)How are these links being modified? Unless you use Edit Original from within ID they aren't going to update automatically.
As for layers, perhaps you are thinking of Object Layer Options which allow you to change visibility of layeres in a linked Photoshop file, but not move them.
A launch announcemt date was announced for CS5 (Bob posted about it this morning). Just so you know, Adobe has said that CS5 apps will not run on PPC powered Macs, and if current ploicy holds your CS1 will not be eligible for upgrade pricing once CS5 is released (CS2 would be the earliest version eligible), so you might want to look at the relative costs of upgrading now against the cost of a full license. In the past there has been a window around the release date where users buying the current version are eligible for the new version upgrade for free, but that isn't guaranteed to continued.

3. Re: Indesign fails to update links 70% of the time...
John Nez Mar 24, 2010 12:50 PM (in response to Peter Spier)Thanks for the information... very helpful all around.
About hyphenation: I constantly have to select the text in Indesign and then unclick the 'hyphenate' button.
I guess I'd hoped there was a universal preference that would have all text un-hyphenated all the time.
About updating linke: I seem to be doing all that... but it still updates links sporadically.
Maybe it's got something to do with the cache or something... a mystery in any event.
About moving Photoshop layers from Indesign: Drat! I thought I read once that such a thing could be done... it sure would make life a lot easier for the work I do.
Thanks for the heads up about the CS upgrade. I'll certainly have to check out the upgrade details.
I'm planning on getting a new Mac Pro or iMac, so it'll be a complicated choice in any event.

4. Re: Indesign fails to update links 70% of the time...
Peter Spier Mar 24, 2010 1:02 PM (in response to John Nez)For existing documents you'll need to do a number of things to turn off hyphenation completely. Satrt by editng the [Basic Paragraph] style and any others that are NOT based on Basic Paragraph. Then with the text tool active, but no active text insertion or highlighted text, check top be sure hyphenation is disabled in the options from the control panel or paragraph panel.
