AS3: How to access object that's only on one frame of a movieClip

When you have any object that's only in one frame of a movieClip, it seems this object is "null" and can't be accessed through code. I find it really strange and I must be doing something wrong, but what I do is simple: got the first frame showing something and on mouseOver show a second frame with a "x" button on top right to close the "window". So this "x" button is a movieClip I placed in frame 2 only, and gave it a name. It used to work with ActionScript 2 so either I was being lucky and it should not have worked, or AS3 has some new way of doing this. Any help?
