What version of PrPro are you using. If you have CS4, just create a new Sequence with the proper Presets and then Copy/Paste your Assets into it.

You have two choices: Black bars or lousy images. If you want the latter, use interpret footage and export as widescreen. If your wife/girlfriend is anywhere in the picture, you better go for black bars. She will not appreciate looking so fat.

I always refer to that "look" with, "what will Aunt Marge think of her image?"
You mention black bars on the side so i assume the footage is 4:3?
If so, just import the CS3 project into a standard project in CS3.
For CS4: make a new standard sequence.
Import CS3 project. Copy eveything from the old timeline into the new.
If the footage is widescreen everything will look like letterbox. Bars on top/below.
