    Premiere Elements 8 problems

    26.2morgan

I just bought a new computer along with a new Canon Vixia HF20 HD camcorder and premiere elements 8. The software has been a problem since new. It freezes and when trying to edit video, the preview window is so choppy, you can't edit. I installed the update pre 8.0.1. and updated my video card. Now it won't even finish a burn. I get a blue screen or my computer just restarts. everything else runs fine on the computer. I'm attaching my computer specs.

      Please help. Scott

1 hard drive is never going to work to edit HD

What I am going to build later this year is near the top of my notes page... with 3 hard drives

I agree with John T., that a single HDD is never going to give you good performance. Many recommend 2 physical 7200 RPM min HDD's, and I personally think that 3x should be the minimum in this general config.

C:\ OS, programs and probably Page File

            D:\ Project and Scratch Disks

E:\ Media - note: for HD, this could well be a RAID in one of the 0 configs.

Now, BSOD's are most often hardware related. Things to look at are:

1.) heat buildup, especially in the CPU

2.) RAM - is one stick going bad?

3.) power supply - is it failing, or are the voltages per rail off?

4.) MoBo - bad soldered joints can go bad from mechanical, or heat wear

The tools, linked in this ARTICLE can help you. SpeedFan would be my very first stop.

This ARTICLE might give you tips on finding out what is going on with your computer, just before and during the crashes.

I'd also set up the OS to NOT reboot on error, as the info on that BSOD might yield some clues too.

            Good luck,

              Me too.

              Intel Quad CPU, 8G RAM, Velociraptor 10K RPM HDD1, 1.5 TB HDD2

              Windows 7-64

This is my first try with Premier Elements.

              Crash, Crash, Crash.

              CC Cleaner, etc.

              What is the deal here?

              Google it:

Results 1 - 10  of about 247,000 for adobe premiere elements 8 crashes

247,000 results for adobe premiere elements crashes.

              That's a lot of uninstall / reinstall.

Now, would you care to post your problems, your system, your Project Presets and your Assets' full details?

If so, you might want to read this ARTICLE to help us help you. It covers the types of info that will be so useful. If you are not looking for solutions, then that will be fine too.

Here is a CamStudio vid of what I see on my computer when I run Adobe Premiere 8.

This is all it will do. The project is empty. It will crash no mater what I do. Start a new project, or open a project I tried to start that crashed. I have never been able to add any vid. It has always crashed before I can do anything.

Looks like a stout system, thanks.

Did not see the date of your nVidia video card, but might have missed it. Do you have the date handy?

See date above. Looks like HP installed a card manufactured about 9 years before I bought the computer.

Is there a problem with the specs?

Now, can you also tell us about the programs and Processes that launch/run at boot up?

Usual stuff. I use the new free Microsoft Antivirus, gotomypc, sync, I disabled Carbonite and Google search and World Community Grid.

Please tell us about your Windows Virtual Memory. What is the size, and where located, plus how it's managed - statically, or dynamically?

See above. How SHOULD it be set to run this program successfully?

                              What is your Project Preset?

What is that? If it is set during operation of the program I am not able to deal with it because the program crashes before I even move my mouse.

What are the specs. of your source files?

                              Never got that far.

Do you get any specific error, or warning messages.

Watch the vid. Same thing every time.

                              Good luck,

Thank you. I usually don't expect to rely on luck when I install an Adobe product.

I have seen some posts about nvidia cards not working with P8.

                                I have an nvidia card.

How would I check to see if that is the ploblem?

                                (without actually switching cards)

How would I check to see if that is the ploblem?

Here is the current nVidia driver: 197.13, dated: 03/25/2010.

With all that data, I still have not seen the driver #, or date. Probably the easiest way to get that is to go to Start>Run and type "dxdiag.exe," without the " marks. Look at the Display tab, and then the Drivers pane. Your nVidia driver will be listed there.

If it is not the one above, then go to the nVidia site, download that driver (or later one, if you go tomorrow, or the next day, as these change rapidly) and read the installation instructions. Note: different cards and different drivers require different installation actions. Most are just a simple run the executable, but some can get rather involved. Read the instructions for your card, and for the downloaded driver, and follow those to the letter.

                                  Good luck,

If you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, you will get Task Manager. Go to the Processes tab, and just do screen-caps of that list. Note, if you do not have a screen-cap program, like Snag-it, you will need to do several, as that list is scrollable, and you'll want the full list, i.e. several screen-caps to show all of the processes.

Likely that you have many extra programs and Processes running, that you do not need. This ARTICLE will tell you how to set up your computer and get it ready for an editing session.

Please tell us about your Windows Virtual Memory. What is the size, and where located, plus how it's managed - statically, or dynamically?

The easiest way to get this info is to go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance>Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory>Change. That will bring up the Virtual Memory screen, where you can see, and set, the Virtual Memory. Again, a screen-cap will tell us all about it.

                                    What is your Project Preset?

What is that? If it is set during operation of the program I am not able to deal with it because the program crashes before I even move my mouse.

When one begins a New Project, they will choose a Project Preset from a drop-down menu. That is what we need to know - what was chosen?

                                    Good luck,

Do you get any specific error, or warning messages.

Did you fill in the info requested in that pop-up message?

Did you give Adobe your e-mail address to allow them to furnish you with details of your crash?

When a program, or system crashes, or hangs, there is often a "breadcrumb trail" left behind. This ARTICLE will give you tips on finding clues as to what was happening just before and during the crash. For this, Event Viewer will be your friend. Check any and all error, or warning messages. Many will just be code, and will be useless. It is very likely that some will have links. Follow each and every link furnished. Some will lead to the MS site, and some might lead to a vendor's site. Be patient, and look at EVERY error, or warning message, around the time of the crash. It is probably easiest to just launch PrE 8, let it crash and just note the time. That will narrow things down a bit, but look before the crash too. Check the Applications and the System tabs for the error, or warning messages.

                                        Good luck,

Thanks for all the info I'll have digest it all. I've  been busy and have been on much latley but just recorded a lacrosse game yesterday in HD and decided to load the Image Mixer 3 video editing software that came with the camera. Although it is basic editing, it worked, and I was actually able to edit clips which I can't with adobe because the preview is so choppy ect. I really want to use the software that I spent 149.00 dollars for, and cant believe free software works better.
