When you write "Adobe file", what exactly do you mean - PDF file? (There are quite a number of different Adobe files.)
Them you mention an error message; what is the message?
P.S. one more question: "file opens with windows" - what does this mean; what program will open? (Windows is most likely already running.)
Maybe the file is blocked or damaged, check out by another lighter PDF reader, which will helps.
I meant to say, a pdf file.
This is what happens:
If I click on a pdf file (which has an adobe logo), I get a quick flash of MS word, (then a box would appear instead of opening the file-which is "File Conversion box with an extension of the name of the file)) and MS Word encrypted codes....etc etc
To answer your second question: The file is opened or opens with MS words, which shows as "default'

Right click the PDF and choose Open with:
Then from the list of programs, select Adobe reader as the program to open it with.
Check the box to always use this program for this file type and click OK.
If Adobe Reader isn't in the list of programs, browse to it in the Program Files/Adobe/Reader 9/Reader folder, then select it and choose to always use it for this file type.
Trust me, I did follow exactly as you suggested. I get the same error message.
