PE7 crashes when I add a video elements?

    simonneal72

I have PE 7 running on a dell desktop

that has been upgraded to windows 7.

Its a new computer and PE7 wasn't run when under vista.

When you load PE7 it will start but if you add a video file it crashes.

Then everytime you re load PE7 it crashes as soon as you either start

a new project or exisiting. If you rename the video file PE7 can't find it and

so loads. I can add photo elements no problem.

      I tried reinstalling didn't help.

All drivers are up to date.

      Video files are .mpg

Tried creating anew users same problem

      Any clues anyone?

          Welcome to the forum.

Take a look at this ARTICLE, to get an idea of the additional info that will be very useful to us.

Also, when you say that you "upgraded to Win7," did you do a clean install, or just upgrade from Vista? Is Win7 32-bit, or 64-bit?

          Good luck,

Also, what kind of camcorder is your video coming from and how did you get it into your computer?

Thanks I will read through the article and post

              the relevant info.

It was an upgrade from Vista Home premium 64 bit

It was from a sony camcorder (need

to get specs) and was downloaded using the windows

                default downloader.

There have been quite a few reports of upgrading from Vista to Win7 causing issues. I hope that will not be part of the problem. I have always found that a clean OS install worked far better for me.

Good luck, and we'll be looking for the details.

We'll be able to tell more once we find out if your camcoder is a hard drive, miniDV, HDV or AVCHD hard drive camcorder.

Again, Simon, that doesn't tell us anything. There are several types.

Can you post the model number from the bottom of the cam? We can look it up for you.

Your camcorder is a standard definition hard drive camcorder.

You should use DVD/Hard Drive Camcorder project preset and you should use Get Media/from Hard Drive Camcorders to download the files from the camcorder into your computer.

You will also need to render your files regularly as you add them to your timeline so that the red line above the clips is green as much as possible.

I can add .mov, .m4v and .wmv files with no problems

I can add audio files also.

You've updated your system, defragged your drive and you're using a standard video format.

At this point, I'm not sure we can be much more help for you on the forum. You likely need more specific troubleshooting, including possibly a check for a program conflict.

You can certainly use MPEG Streamclip to convert those MPEGs into DV-AVIs, and those should work perfectly in a project set up with the DV presets.

                                    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0

But there may also be something deeper going on with your system. You certainly should not be having problems with such basic footage.

A call to Adobe Tech Support may be in order. Sorry that I can't do more for you.

                                      Hi Steve,

Yeah thanks for that, I put a call into support and they want to charge me £25 for the call but recommended upgrading to PE 8 as they know that it

has been tested with Windows 7 (even though the website says PE7 is compatible!) and we would get free support with that. I need it to be a stable as possible because its my father computer and he is wanting to do some video editing and wouldn't be able to troubleshoot like this and i live in Uganda. So I think we will go for the upgrade.

Would you recommend any easy guides to video editing I could look at for him?

                                      Thanks for all your help.

I absolutely would recommend that you NOT upgrade to version 8, Simon, if you want more stability!

Version 7 is much more stable a product -- and, in my opinion, if youre having problems with version 7, version 8 is going to definitely give you a world of heartache.
