    Automated Flying photos effect

    pfield69 Level 1

Hi, I'm trying to produce an effect to add to a photo dvd title page.

I would like all the images to fly out of the centre of the screen twisting and tumbling (a bit like the starfield screen saver or warp speed effect).

It will take ages to do each line at a time so I was looking for a plugin or something to speed up the process.

I'm using Premiere & After Effect CS4 for a PC

You could use a particle system. You could put the pictures in a composition all sequenced together and use them as the particle source.

Do you have Trapcode Particular? if so, then it would be relatively easy using these steps:

            • put all photos in a pre-comp
            • make them only a few frames long
            • use the Sequence Layers keyframe assistant to stagger them
            • put the pre-comp in the main comp
            • apply Particular to a new solid
            • set the particle type to custom, referencing the pre-comp layer
            • set the time sampling to Split Clip
            • crank up the number of clips

For otehr plug-ins you will have to use other methods and may need to use multiple layers. An option would e.g. be Card Dance, where you use layer maps to modulate the position and scale to create the illusion of particles appearing. The images then would have to be arranged as a grid in a pre-comp...

With Trapcode mentioned in one out of four posts around here as the only possible solution, when will Todd talk his people into bundling Particular with AE?

                Thanks for all the replies.

I looked at Particular which looks great (I downloaded the trial to play with) but at $450 its a bit rich (&powerful) for this simple project I'm doing.

I have opted to used the CardDance effect bulit into AE CS4.

It gives me what I want (nearly) and with a bit of light effects looks quite good as 1000s of pictures fly tumbling through space.

Thanks again for all your help.
