    DW8 - Library Items - Additional tags

    gmattison_2000
      I am using DreamWeaver 8, and trying to create a library items with meta tags in the header section. My objective is to individually track every page accessed through Google Analytics. Hence all of my pages have a unique title. If necessary, I would like update all the keywords and description with a simple update for the entire site. Because all the pages share the same meta tags except for the title, creating a library item with the meta tags makes sense. The problem is that I am having issues when I insert the library item back in the web page.

      Here is the page I started with:

      <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" " http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

      <html xmlns=" http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">

      <head>
      <title>Company | Area | Page Name </title>
      <meta name="Keywords" content="key1, key2, key3, key4"/>
      <meta name="Description" content="Internal website for Time Tracking"/>
      <link rel="stylesheet" href="../css/style.css" type="text/css"/>
      <script src="../js/sublinks.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
      </head>

      <body>

      </body>

      </html>

      I moved all the meta tags into a library item: (test3.lbi).

      <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
      <meta name="Keywords" content="key1, key2, key3, key4"/>
      <meta name="Description" content="Internal website for Time Tracking"/>
      <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"/>
      <link rel="stylesheet" href="../css/style.css" type="text/css"/>
      <script src="../js/sublinks.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
      <script src="../js/tellafriend.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

      After creating the library item, when I tried inserting the library item back into the web page, I get the following code which have extra tags, and make the web page syntactically wrong.

      <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" " http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

      <html xmlns=" http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">

      <head>
      <title>Company | Area | Page Name </title>
      </head>
      </html>

      <!-- #BeginLibraryItem "/Library/test3.lbi" -->
      <meta name="Keywords" content="key1, key2, key3, key4"/>
      <meta name="Description" content="Internal website for Time Tracking"/>
      <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"/>
      <!-- #EndLibraryItem -->
      <html xmlns=" http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">
      <head>

      </head>

      <body>

      </body>

      </html>

      As you can see there are several additional tags that are bolded above that were inserted by DW8.

      Questions:

      a) Is this a bug in DW8?
      b) Can any one let me know how to work around this situation?

      Thank you.

          Cannot put a Library item in the head of the page. Use a server-side
          include instead.

            Thanks. The Server Side Include appears to be the answer, although the disadvantage is that I cannot do local testing without a server.

            Another quick question. If I move the meta tags into a server side include, does it affect how the search engines parse the web page and build their index?

            Thanks in advance.

              Sure you can. Enable preview with temp files in your preferences.

              No - by the time the SE gets the page, the include is already there. Bear
              in mind that a) the keywords meta is useless, and b) the description tag
              should be different on each page to better describe that page's content.
