    Template Update

    pixel8fx
      OK...

I am familiar with MX2004, my wife just ordered DW CS3, but is using a demo for now until her package arrives in a couple days. My wife is brand new to DW (used FP for years), I've been using DW since MX2004 came out and am very familiar with its features, creating countless sites with no issue. I've finally made her a believer in DW over M$ FP.

While working on my wife's new site, I created the graphics needed, and then the structure for her site, saving it as a template. No prob. Walking her through the steps of creating content pages from templates was simple & she had no issue. As she saved the updates to the template the pages updated... then, without warning, the pages quit updating. She followed the steps, but they just were not updating.

She came to me (the DW 'guru') and I've been scratching my head. Without making accusation of her changing something, I just created a new template, just like the first one, and we started from scratch. Again, for a while, no issues updating, then it suddenly quit.

Anyone else have this issue? I wondered if this was a glitch in the demo, a glitch in DW CS3, or me. Any input would save me from scratching what little hair is left on my head, and help me to save face with my wife.

      Talk to me people.

          Level 7
Here are seven common mistakes that will result in changes not propagating
          from Template to child -

          1. Rename the Templates folder
          2. Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in the site other
          than root level
          3. Move a template out of the Templates folder.
          4. Make changes to an editable region of the template (which will not
          propagate)
          5. Assume that template changes can be uploaded to the server without also
          uploading the changed local files
          6. Corrupt the site cache so that the link between template and child page
          is broken
7, Improperly create your child pages by simply opening the template,
adding page specific content, and resaving the template with an *.html
extension rather that its *.dwt extension. (you can tell if this is the case
by looking at the code on a child page - if you see anything like <!--
TemplateBeginEditable... then this is what you have done)

The 6th problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced > Recreate Site
Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing them. Have you
          done any of those?

            Well,

I've worked through the above mentioned scenarios with her, however, I have not looked at her page to ensure that she didn't just 'save as', creating an issue. She ensures me that she was stepping through the correct process in creating & saving the pages from the template.

Similarly, I have had no issue at all in MX'04, but after a few minutes on her system in CS3 she has the issue.

I thought that it could, perhaps, be linked to a no-repeat command I placed in the code... actually, she suspected the code. Thjis suspected code is mentioned in another post that I made dealing with a layers question.

I'm away from her system right now, so i cant check the code as you suggested, but I will tonight.

            Thnx

I am also having this same issue with DW templates. I'm using DW 8 but I also had the problem with the prevous version. DW does not apply changes made to the template to the files (that were made from the template). I do not do any of the 7 items that were previously mentioned by Murray (in this post).

I carefully create the template and save it as a template. Then I create a new file ("New from Template") from the template and then edit the new file. It worked for the first few times of saving the file. But now after I edit the template, the new files are not updated. I have tried "save as.... template", or "save" and even "save as template". I end up having to trick the new file by doing "Modify / Template / Apply Template to Page" in order for it to recognize the template.

When I look at the top of the html code in the new file, it shows the correct template. Here are the first 4 lines:

              <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" " http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
              <html xmlns=" http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/main_template.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
              <head>

              Any ideas?

I'll bet you did. Did you recreate your site cache?

                > I have tried "save as.... template",
                > or "save" and even "save as template".

Huh? You are saving a template with save as template? All you would ever
need to use is just "Save".

                > I end up having to trick the new file

This almost guarantees that your file cache is bad.

Try recreating the cache. If that doesn't work, then try this using Site
                Manager -

                1. Export the site definition to some know location on your drive.
                2. REMOVE the site definition.
                3. Import the exported definition.

                Work now?
