Contribute Cannot "Verify Server State" in Creating Connection

I'm running Contribute CS4 latest on Mac OS X 10.5.8. Until the most recent Contribute auto update (yesterday) things were working fine. After the latest update, Contribute hung (in perpetual "waiting for server" state) when trying to connect. I had to kill it. I retried a few times and then removed the .plist files and tried again. Contribute is now attempting to create the connection (no plist files) and does get through several FTP commands successfully. But, it hangs on "Verifying Server State" and eventually times out with "unknown error". I've retried it a couple of times and it repeatedly terminates in this way. However, at the same time, I'm able to ftp into the server with my Mac client and everything is fine on the server end. So, the problem seems to be with the latest Contribute auto update.

Any ideas as to what it might be and how to work around it?
