Try installing Reader 9.3 from adobe.com
It uninstalls any existing reader installation on the system before it installs itself.
(Enable msi logging on your system by setting the registry key :
and provide the MSI log file (MSI****.log) created in the temp directory)

installation has failed, with no explanatory messages.

Have you enabled MSI logging on your system and obtained the log???
