I have a small routine that creates a shadow field for the folder name (after removing unsupported characters such as blanks). I set it as being available for filtering and smart objects. I will post the code so you can have a look but it is a work in progress as you will see parts of the code that are no longer being used but I have been too lazy to remove. There are other routines unrelated as well. No laughing
Keep in mind that these are shadow fields and thus won't be embedded into the files - but they can be updated and used like any other field for sorting, etc. I needed folder name but have tested with others.
I don't know how to add a zip file to this post so I will send to you directly.
Got it Jeff - thank you so much! (Haven't looked at it yet)
Perhaps you can post the solution? Sounds interesting and usefull to me.

Will do - Give me a few days though, OK?
And - some news?
- You get presence in the library filters by setting 'browsable' in your custom metadata provider (see SDK programmers guide).
- Use photo:get/setPropertyForPlugin to read/write custom metadata fields.
Thats it in a nutshell.
