The Type on path tool should not be greyed out. You may have corrupted preferences.
Sometimes, just restarting is enough. Otherwise you may try to pres Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup, or with Illy closed Move the folder
Thanks for the hint. It is still not working however. I did a fresh restart of my computer and opened just Illustrator and attempted your methode and no luck....
I just hope it is not my illustrator itself that is broke. While i managed to get my letter as a circle using the open path method, i still want to find out why on a closed path it is not working. Very weird.
Yes.. i had to create an almost closed circle using the pen tools. Really weird stuff.
Moving the folder, no luck.
What happens if you close the circle after typing on it (Direct Selection Tool, Ctrl/Cmd+J)?
If i close the circle manually after typing a text, i don't lose my text or my positionning of it. But the tools become gray immediatly after.
Also even once i closed it, the texte cannot go past the start and the end of the path i made before closing it. I have to manually change the position of the begining and the end and move them on top of each other.
But the tool will remain gray.
Erm. Also If i try your method following exactly what you say it open a warning box telling me :
" to join you must select two open endpoints ( i am ). If they are not on the same path ( they are ) they cannot be on text paths nor inside graphs ( what ? ) and if both of them are grouped ( they are not ), they must be in the same group. ( not the case. same item, same group, same layer)

If you cannot use the Ellipse tool to make a circle and then use the Text tool to click on the path and get an blinking cursor to begin inserting text yiou need to follow the instructions above. Quit AI. Restart holding down the Cmd/Crtl-Opt/Alt-Shift keys. You will be presented with a dialog asking if you want to reset the preferences. Say yes.
I did that. no change.
Through your link didn't solve my problem by itself, it gave me a lead to the real probleme.
Here is what i had to do... since i'm using photoshop, illustrator, Dreamweaver and flash at the same time ( yeah.. all 4 of them running at the same time, and all CS4 ), i figured that if i was to reset the preference on all of them it might work, and.. Voila. it is working now.
But that mean that somehow, somwhere, one of the other 3 program was corrupting illustrator in someway. I am unable to tell you which one did what, but all i know that after resetting all preference, closing them all, reopening AI, it worked. Even after i opened them all back, it worked.
Bites me to not know exactly what happened.
Anyway THX.. i'm giving point.
Thank you very much for the solution, Chorale.
This is an invaluable contribution to our shared knowledge here. I will add it to the hint Other Options, and I am sure many of us will remember.
No matter what everyone has tried to suggest, there have always been unsolved cases from time to time.
Hopefully this will fill the gap, or at least one of the gaps.
You are Quite welcome
Your solution is now item 8 in Other Options.
That .. nice
