P Spier May 5, 2010 1:15 PM (in response to Talyianna)We're talking about on screen? Are you using High Quality Display in both versions?
What OS, by the way?

5. Re: Why does my color look so different in CS5 compared to CS4?
P Spier May 5, 2010 1:41 PM (in response to Talyianna)Any way you could do a screen capture for each of them and get them side by side? Maybe put both into the same Photoshop doc? You can embed an image here using the camera icon.

6. Re: Why does my color look so different in CS5 compared to CS4?
Talyianna May 5, 2010 2:01 PM (in response to P Spier)Here you go:) On the right is how the image should look. (P.S. Once I export to pdf from both versions, all looks correct in Acrobat...so it is just the onscreen view that is now showing up right. If I do a proof setup and view it as photoshop 5 default cmyk, preserving CMYK numbers, all looks correct again...but I did not have to do this is in CS4 because everything always matched perfectly from Adobe app to app)

7. Re: Why does my color look so different in CS5 compared to CS4?
P Spier May 5, 2010 2:10 PM (in response to Talyianna)Is the image CMYK or RGB? Any transparency on the page? Flattener color space? Do you have Overprint Preview turned on in one version and not the other?

8. Re: Why does my color look so different in CS5 compared to CS4?
Talyianna May 5, 2010 2:22 PM (in response to P Spier)The image is CMYK, no transparency on the page. Transparency blend space both Document CMYK. Overprint preview not turned on in either.

Would you be willing to post the image or send to me privately for testing here? I'd like see if I get the same results.

11. Re: Why does my color look so different in CS5 compared to CS4?
P Spier May 5, 2010 3:07 PM (in response to Talyianna)They look pretty close to identical here on XP with my calibrated monitor. That's confirmed by stacking thescreen grabs and setting the top layer to difference in Photoshop.
I notice that there is no embedded profile, so I really suspect the color difference is due to a difference in the document working space. Edit > Assign Profiles... and make sure you assign the same profile to both documents and and then take another look. Also select the image in both and go to "Image Color Settings" from the Object menu and be sure you haven't assigned a profile to one and not the other at the image level.

12. Re: Why does my color look so different in CS5 compared to CS4?
Talyianna May 5, 2010 4:18 PM (in response to P Spier)Okay...NOW I am truly baffled. I just checked on my laptop and the image looks identical in both versions of InDesign. I have checked all the settings and compared them to my desktop ID installations and EVERYTHING is identical. The only difference between them is that on *both* versions of ID on my desktop - under "Image Color Settings" - it says "Note: Policy Profile for this image is OK" whereas on my laptop it says "Note: Policy Profile for this image is off" on both versions of ID. My desktop is the most important of course as that is where I do the bulk of my work. The CS5 install on both the laptop and desktop are fresh installs.

14. Re: Why does my color look so different in CS5 compared to CS4?
Talyianna May 5, 2010 4:30 PM (in response to P Spier)Okay....you are not going to believe this!! Perhaps this is a bug or perhaps this is a one-time-mystery-of-the-unexplained thing.
I went into my desktop version of CS5 and loaded completely different color settings...pressed okay, then went BACK straight away and reloaded my usual [custom] color settings and all suddenly looked PERFECT. [I am going to have to verify this when I go into work tomorrow as I just tested via remote login so am looking at things via my macbook screen. The color difference was VERY noticeable at first between the two ID versions on my desktop so I was able to easily tell. Now they look the same.
All in all, than you SO much for your help (so this was *not* a waste of time). All this troubleshooting really helped me a lot as to what to look for in future similar instances.

Jon WorldAccent Feb 18, 2011 4:01 AM (in response to CHaMutie)That dialog is for a particular image. Click on the image, then select "Image Color Settings..." in the Object menu
