    Overwrite Local Copy Prompt

    Level 7
We just upgraded to Dreamweaver CS3 and everytime we open a file it asks us
if we want to overwrite the local copy of the file. This did not happen in
the previous version we had. Is there a way to turn this off? It is annoying
to have to keep saying "Yes" everytime I go to change a file. Any help would
      be appreciated.

DW is confused by your site definition. Have you set your site as "Site" or
          as "FTP & RDS Server"?

The site is set up as Local/Network. There is no testing server listed (a
network drive is our testing site). There is nothing in my setup to indicate
anything is set up as FTP or RDS server.

When you look at the site name in the list of sites on the Files panel, do
you see a computer icon or a file folder icon?

OK - thank you. Why do you have checkin/checkout enabled? Are you
collaborating with other developers on this site? This is the source of
your prompt as it means that you are using the REMOTE site as the source of
your files rather than the traditional local site.

I'm experiencing the exact same problem and it's not related to the file checkin/out option.

In the previous version of DW(2004) when you defined a remote FTP site you could open the remote files and when you did your local copy was automatically overwritten. In CS3 there is a very annoying prompt that pops up each time you open a remote file which asks you if you want to overwrite your local copy.

That's something i would like to see disabled or at least made optional since it's very annoying and thus counter productive to have to click 2 times each time you open a file. I'm fully aware that i'm going to overwrite my local copy, else i wouldn't be working in remote view.

I hope you filed it as a bug :/

MX had this option, CS2+ doesn't. Why is that. Check in/out is nice, but auto overwrite and working in remote view is a lot faster. Well, used to be.. damn

Agreed! I hate this prompt. I've been hunting for a way to disable it for awhile. One of the most irritating things I've ever seen in Dreamweaver. I hope this gets sorted out soon. If anyone finds a way to disable it, please post something here.

The problem is the way you have your site defined. You will get that prompt
every time when you are editing directly on the server.

When you create a site in Site Manager by clicking on the New button, you
                                              are offered TWO choices:

                                              Site
                                              FTP & RDS Site

You should always choose the former rather than the latter. The "Site"
option will give you a Local Site and a Remote Site. All your files will be
in the Local Site, where you can edit them, and when finished, upload them
to the Remote Site. The FTP & RDS Site option is a specialty use site,
really intended only for ColdFusion users, where you are editing the LIVE
files directly on the server. This is always a poor option unless you are a
                                              very experienced user.

You can tell which way you have defined your sites in several ways -

                                              * When you edit your Site definition (either by selecting it and clicking on
EDIT in Site Manager, or by double clicking on the site's name in the site
list on the Files panel), you are given a single-state dialog panel called
"Configure Server" asking for FTP connection information, or
                                              * When you look at the site name in the Files panel list, you see an icon of
two networked computers rather than an icon of a folder, or
                                              * When you look at the site name in the Files panel, the FTP & RDS Server
sites sort to the TOP of the list.

If your site has been defined as an FTP & RDS Server site, anytime you OPEN
a file for editing, you will be prompted about getting dependent files
(unless you have disabled this in your PREFERENCES), and if DW finds a copy
of that file already in your operating systems scratch area (i.e., you have
already opened that file once before), it may also prompt whether you want
                                              to overwrite it.

If your site has already been defined as an FTP & RDS Server site, I am not
aware of a way to change it to the usual "Site" site. However, you can just
create a new site definition for the Site-type site, which contains the path
information for the Local Root folder and the FTP information for the Remote
server, and begin to use that one instead.

For ppl going mad over this prob or any related ftp issues - have a look at PhpED - direct or local editing, queue, multiple different server connections simultaneously, much faster. There are many reasons why DW is better but if you know what am I talking about just have a look.

That's the whole point. You are using the wrong kind of site definition.
Do NOT use FTP & RDS sites. Please review the last post.

                                                      1. Is the icon next to the site's folder in the Files Panel a network icon
                                                      or a folder icon?

                                                      2. Why are you clicking on a file in the Remote site to open it?

Define a new site, choosing the SITE option and not RDS.

define it to a Local site folder, enter the remote info, then in dw files
panel, connect to remote and Get all the remote files.

then click on a Local file to open it.

I would like to join the pool of users disappointed by the this change in DW behavior. I've been working with DW for years, since DW2... And now I'm very angry.

Exactly! My other colleagues are not using DW, so check in/out is not an option. But I don't want to edit my local file, initiate uploading it to a server and only then find out (by a DW prompt) that this file has already been changed by someone else! And I must discard my changes, download the changed file, and redo my changes in it, right? Also, sometimes I work from different locations. That's why I always used to work with a Remote, and DW always did a very good job of comparing the remote file with my local copy, and asking me to confirm the overwriting ONLY when the remote file is older than the local. This is what I (and as it seems to me, many others) call a convenient way of working.

I'm afraid I'll have to get back to DW8 until this "feature" is reverted to the original behavior.

                                                        kind regards,
                                                        DW user since 2000.
