Losing Remote Site Login Info Everytime I quit

    izycrzy

Hi Everyone, I just installed CS4 on a new Macbook Pro laptop (running Snow Leopard). Everytime I quit DW I have to re-enter the site ftp info for both my remote server and testing server (and yes, I have the "Save" box ticked).  It just doesn't hold my info, when I quit the App then restart, the host name is still in the define sites dialog there but not the login or password.

Any info would be invaluable. Thanks.

There is a TechNote about this on the DW Support Center:

          http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/349/3491671c.html

It doesn't happen very often for me, but I do run into this problem once in a while. I use a very low-tech solution. Immediately after creating a new Site definition, and verifying that the id/passwords work, I Export my Site definition (a .ste file is created). Then when I lose the passwords, I just re-import the Site definition to restore the id and pw.

This is a good idea anyway, in case your Registry/Preferences get corrupted, then you can re-load them from the .ste files.

          Hope this helps,

          Randy

            Randy,

Forgive me but that ancient technote is a Macromedia technote for DW8 (2005) on Windows and was resolved by MM with the 8.0.2 updater.

This issue is CS4 (2008) on Mac OSX. No Adobe Technote or patch exists.

Why does Adobe not take patch management seriously and issue a permanent fix rather than forcing users to rely on workarounds such as exporting site definitions?

John, it would be because no issue really exists with the application.  Adobe did extensive testing with CS4, found a few minor bugs, issued some patches and with the development of CS5 being finalized allowed the few small issues to lay to rest because they did not affect the operation of the program(none noted with DW). Based on the users original post, if Mac OS is involved and preferences are not saving it is typically a permissions issue.  In this case the poster should run a check permissions on their disk, and depending on the situation if a file was somehow corrupted, redefine the site as a last resort.

You must be running a different version of CS4 to me Snake.

I see several recurring issues in these forums with CS4 with defining local root folders, replacing images, losing FTP info.

I see no patches for CS4

                http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/downloads_updaters.html

I have no doubt that Adobe extensively tests its software before shipping. Their products are truly excellent.

However, I see no commitment from Adobe to the less lucrative craft of fixing bugs and issuing updates, other than telling us it's fixed in the next version.

I don't want to drag this topic too far from the original poster, but the root folder issue you are referring to is with Windows Vista/7 only, Mac OS was not affected.  I had CS4 running on Snow Leopard since it's inception with only minor issues that were corrected in an Apple patch (I don't remember whether it was 10.6.1 or 10.6.2 that fixed it).  The only Mac issue that still exists is with Acrobat not working with Safari because Apple is pushing 64-bit and Acrobat was not updated with CS5 (that is really overdue for updates) and the browser plugin is still not 64-bit.

Thanks for the reply Snake. I'm aware that some CS4 issues are OS-specific.

You're obviously happy with CS4 on OSX. I wasn't happy with CS4 on Win 7.

We're not addressing the OP's question so we may as well leave things there.

                    Thanks for the input.

                      Hi John,

I am an engineer on the Dreamweaver Team. I do not work for Tech Support. I keep some TechNotes bookmarked for common problems that I see people having. I missed that it was for the wrong OS. My apologies if that link was not helpful.

The first step in providing a TechNote or patch is for us to be able to reproduce the problem. Can you reliably reproduce the problem? Please provide steps so that I can reproduce it.

And I stand by my recommendation to export your site definitions Many people don't back them up and are sorry later.

                      Regards,

                        Randy,

I'm aware that you're a DW engineer. I've really appreciated your input in the forums over the years.

I too keep Technotes handy for common issues which crop up here. I was hoping that you might have some inside knowledge on this issue rather than an ancient Technote which I myself have often referred people to since it was created-that's why I knew it didn't apply here

I cannot reproduce this particular issue. If I could, I'd gladly supply reproducible steps.

Exporting site definitions: I agree. Highly recommended. I do so myself but it's not the long term answer for why DW loses site definitions in day-to-day use.

Sorry, but I don't know any more about the problem. If anyone has steps to reproduce the problem, especially if it still happens in CS5, then please post them here.

                          Thanks,

I'd like to thank everyone fo their time responing to this post.

I have repaired my permissions and am still having the same problem. The best soltuion I've found is the suggestion to re-build the site from the exported ste file everytime I restart DW. Kind of a pain. Maybe I can get IT to upgrade me to CS5 and that will resolve this issue.

Well the problem went away. I'm really not sure what changed. But Dreamweaver now seems to be holding onto my FTP info when I quit and restart. May have been that I reapired the permissions... but that didn't seem to fix it right away. Thanks again for the help everyone.

                                you did to "fix permissions".

                                  Hi Al,

It easy - Applications Folder > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the disk with DW on it and click "Repair Permissions". Like I say, I'm not sure if that's what did it but eventually DW started hanging on to my login info again.....

                                  Good Luck.

                                    Hi Randy,

I am having the "Lost Username/Password" Issue in DWCS5

I haven't checked every site that I have in DW, but there are a few (3) that consistently lose their username/passwords EVERY time I restart DW.

To be more clear...I open DW, try connect to site x remotely, and get the error prompt that there is no UN/PW. I re-enter that info. I am able to continue to use that site as long as DW is open.

Once I quit DW, and restart DW, all UN/PW info is lost.

                                    uggggg

                                    its really annoying

if you are an engineer on the DW team, please put in a word to have this issue fixed asap.

I use DW very often, and this is becoming a big pain in the (%&^*)&^*&^

                                      Which operating system?

In Win Vista / Win 7, log-in to your software by Right-clicking the shortcut icon > Run as Administrator.

Set-up the your remote site log-in details.

                                      Close DW.

Log-in to software the normal way.

                                      Does this help?
