I'm working on a project for a small non-profit I volunteer with. With GIS as the source tool, we're producing a printed atlas or two that would be provided to local community residents and groups. In addition, digital maps would be available on our web site ultimately in both high- and low-res PDFs and possibly a data mart in GIS native where GIS readers can be used. I have a novice understanding of InDesign, Acrobat and GIS.
I could use some guidance with a couple topics. Since I suspect this is a well understood process, links to where these topics are covered will be appreciated.
Print resolution:
Initially, we're going to go directly from GIS to PDF and then to print. (Later we may use InDesign for the overall layout). I've been doing homework on professional printing. It appears color and resolution are the biggies. When it comes to resolution what should be be targeting for? These are full color maps so detail is important. Is there going to be a big difference whether we use printer output or offset?
How do all the resolution decision in GIS factor in?
Acrobat layers:
How Acrobat fits in is also of interest. Taking the layering in GIS to end users so they can pick which layers they are interested in can be done using GIS readers. I understand Acrobat has layering capabilities. Is this a marriage made in heaven?
Thanks for any help.
