Only the latest CS5 uses SELECTED card's GPU for video acceleration
>same .avi files play fine in a media player
Playback is not at all the same as editing
Use the FREE http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to find out what codec is inside that AVI wrapper
Anything other than DV AVI type 2 with 48khz sound is not going to do well in Premiere
Thank you John. It's just that I've always been successfully using this very card on these very files (standard AVI, 48kHz) with a more powerful PSU until it burnt, so now I'm trying to figure if PSU is an issue, since it caused the card to run in low-power mode now.
Oh well... now that you provide that added information... I will GUESS that your problem is, in fact, related to the video mode forced by the power supply
Then how come it plays the same video files in a media player just fine?
I repeat... "Playback is not at all the same as editing"
You have already stated that all worked as you wish with an adequate power supply, and it does not work as you wish with a reduced video mode due to an IN-adequate power supply... I think you have answered your own question
