    CS5 no delete key

    mdharg Community Member

I loaded CS5 from CDs this week. The loading went fine. However I have discovered the delete keys are no longer that at all. They are a content fill key. I see there are no shortcuts for delete. Its really annoying to have to go to the dropdown menu to delete (aka Clear) something when I am cropping a stitched photo edge. Is there any way to fix this or is it a "NEW" design feature?

I briefly used CS4 and I see that Photoshop CS5 does not have a dropdown menu for File>new from memory (clipboard) like my old Elements 2 had. This is like going back to PS4 in the 90s.

The Fill dialog only defaults to the Content Aware option when you're accessing it on the background layer. The old way simply filled with the background color swatch so use Ctrl+Backspace instead.

            Thank you Zeno,

I ran a quick check and it worked as you told me. I hope this stuff gets fixed in the future.

              What's to fix?

In CS4 the delete key in either position clears something when I have it selected. It was that way in my older versions as well. Its a single key action. In CS5 now I have to press two keys Control & Backspace, or use the dropdown menu. It's just more work, period. I hope to not find more stuff like this in other parts of the suite.

Is there any way to change the Backspace/Delete back to its previous function?

Same problem here. Is there any way to change the Backspace/Delete back to its previous function?

Who for heavens sake, had the idea to change the function of the delete key. At least the delete key was a constant through all applications. Now it isn't any more.

I just want to delete. Quick and easy. Is that too much to ask for?

What, exactly, do you mean by "I just want to delete"?

If you mean "I just want the Delete key to fill the Background layer with the background color", then that wasn't really a Delete before either, was it?  It was always a fill.

That said, like you at first I found the change disconcerting.  Just use it for a while; you'll get used to it.

Well, not entirely correct. It was a real delete, if you deleted something on a layer. It was a "fill with background color" only when you were on the background layer.

However. I just want it to behave as it did for the last 24 years.

It's still like that.  The only place where the dialog comes up is on the Background.

Select something on a layer and hit the delete key.  It still deletes just like always for me in that case.  What's it doing for you?

My bad. You are right, it really only behaves different on the background layer. Suppose I have to adjust to this then.

Click this to see an animation of making a selection and hitting the Delete key on the keyboard.  Works with either Backspace or Delete.

No worries.  Change can be difficult to deal with at first.

Note that if you hold down the Control key when using the Delete key on the Background it will behave as it did before.

I P&M'd about this when I jumped from CS3 to 5. Use shift/delete and that'll delete to backround color on a locked 'backround' layer. Or change the layer you want to delete from to a 'layer', then a straight up delete will, well, delete

Old habits die hard, as I still get caught by this now and then, it was a dumb change IMHO, but was needed to show off content aware fill I guess...
