How to move beyond tables for layout?

    river251

My web pages don't look nearly as good as some of the professional pages I see, with images overlaid over images, or merging together in backgrounds, whereas my pages have items located in tables, so it looks like a lot of isolated little things distributed around the page.

Is there a tutorial or something that would teach me to make pages more like the professional ones I see. Here are some examples of how the backgrounds, different sections, etc, merge together, overlay each other, and look so much better than my own website.

      Many thanks for any help!!
