OT: Thunderbird as newsreader on Vista

    Level 7
I'm trying to switch to Thunderbird as a newsreader on my new Windows Vista
machine, and though I have the settings the same as my settings in Outlook
for this newsgroup, when I try to send a message, it never gets past the
      "Sending..." screen.

Is this something I'm doing wrong with Thunderbird, or maybe a Vista
      issue...? Any help much appreciated!

          Patty,

I don't use Thunderbird but was thinking it could be the Windows Firewall.

Did you give Thunderbird permission in the Firewall?

Interestingly, when I checked, Windows Firewall wasn't even turned on -
I would have thought it would have been activated by default on
security-conscious Vista. So I activated it and allowed Thunderbird -
and now Thunderbird *is* sending messages properly. Go figure... :-)

Okay, I take that back. Thunderbird still sends the message - it appears
on the server - but the "Sending..." window never stops showing that it
thinks it's still sending. But this seems to be only with *replies*.

I know you said you're not a Thunderbird user, Ken, so just putting this
out there in case somebody else knows.

Vista does turn the Firewall on by default. You, or someone, must have
inadvertently turned it off. :-) I use T-bird on XP but have not
installed it on Vista yet. I'll try it later today and let you know if I
have any issues. What version of T-bird are you using?

This is a test from Thunderbird on Vista Business 64-bit.

                    Does it work?

For the record, I definitely didn't turn it off (I'm 100% certain), and no
one else has come near it. It's a brand new machine and I've been paying
careful attention to all Vista's questions.

Sorry, I can't check on that machine right now, but it's whatever is the
latest version offered for download from the Mozilla site.

Thanks for trying it out, if you have a chance!

Interesting... I just installed SP1 for Vista, and now Thunderbird isn't
hanging when I reply to a post.
