1. Re: Why starting at 177%
Bernd Alheit May 11, 2010 7:49 AM (in response to WSplawn)Where did you see 177% when you start Acrobat (without opening a file) ?

2. Re: Why starting at 177%
WSplawn May 11, 2010 8:32 AM (in response to Bernd Alheit)Actually, I guess it's a compound question because it involves both Acrobat 9.2 Pro and Acr
obat Reader.
I don't see anything with regard to percent when I open Acrobat because there's no document to zoom. Additionally, I was off on my per cent figure. It's 173% not 177%.
If I open a certain file in Pro it come up set to Fit page. I know this because if I select View Zoom, this is what the radio is on. If I open the same file in Reader it it opens at 173%.
Particularly in Reader, I've noticed that almost any file I open opens at this zoom level. I would prefer some other zoom level as this is quite big.

4. Re: Why starting at 177%
Bernd Alheit May 11, 2010 9:46 AM (in response to WSplawn)With Adobe Acrobat you can specify the initial view in the properties of the document.

5. Re: Why starting at 177%
GKaiseril May 11, 2010 10:16 AM (in response to WSplawn)One can also set the default action for Acrobat/Reader's initial view for any PDF that does not have a set opening zoom value. See 'Edit => Preferences => Initial View". But if an author sets the PDF open properties to a set magnification, it will override your applications preferences.

6. Re: Why starting at 177%
WSplawn May 11, 2010 10:55 AM (in response to GKaiseril)Thank you for responding.
I do not see a setting for initial view, but I do see Default Layout and Zoom section in the Page Display section (tab?) of the Preferences Dialog. I assume this is what you're talking about.
For testing, I set this to 50% in Adobe Pro and saved the file. Sure enough, next time I opened it, it opened at 50%.
Next I tried opening the same file in Reader 9 and in Reader 9 it opened at 173%. I chnged the Default layout and zoom in Reader 9 to 50% also and next time I opened the file in Reader 9 it opened at 50%.
It is not clear to me what's happening but it appears that the Default Layout and Zoom settings are file specific. That is, if I set it for 50% for one pdf file, that does not mean all pdf files will open at 50%. Y/N?
Additionally, it appears that the settings are also version specific. That is, if I set them in Pro to a certain percent, that does not mean if I open the file in reader that it will come up at that percent. Y/N
It would seem logical to have a method, particularly in reader, where I can set the default zoom level that a pdf will be opened to (any pdf) but perhaps Acrobat is not designed that way. Y/N?

7. Re: Why starting at 177%
roggeheflin May 11, 2010 12:47 PM (in response to WSplawn)Navigating the tool bar to Edit -> Prefrences -> Page Display sets the application defaults. To set the document properties, navigate to File -> Properties -> Intial View tab.
The application default (using the Edit -> Prefrences -> Page Display) will be used when the document properties (File -> Properties -> Intial View) are not specified.

8. Re: Why starting at 177%
Bill@VT May 11, 2010 6:38 PM (in response to WSplawn)As was said, the zoom preference can be set in your Acrobat or Reader, but is overridden by the setting in the PDF if has been set. Thus, some PDFs will come up at a preset level that the author felt was important.

9. Re: Why starting at 177%
AlkemystDarkened May 21, 2010 9:20 PM (in response to Bill@VT)To clarify...the setting under Document Properties in Acrobat [not reader] overrides the Reader settings (and even default Acrobat settings).
To fix this, you must open the document in Acrobat [not reader] and then set them.
This said I can open individual document without a problem not, however; if I use an 'index/bookmark' page it defaults to the 177% again.
Not to threadjack, but my answer solves your main problem. You will have this one too.
