This was REALLY cool back in 1998. Now it's very annoying and I'm not even
sure if modern browsers will let you do it.

I was thinking about saying the same thing. Bad idea. You could also throw some animated gifs of a traffic cone that said your site was still under construction. -

FF lets the user decide under advanced options, but I think by default, letting the site control the status bar is disabled as it is considered a security risk.
