QuiRcktime is well known for that. Try another codec/player.
Thanks Harm, but sadly it needs to be in Quicktime format.
The thing that puzzles me is that exporting from 1.5.1 to quicktime was fine, with no wash out. It's only since I got CS5 there's been a problem

There is a post from about a year ago, with similar issues. Seems that QT Player misses the gamma flags in its own files. The OP goes into great detail on how to set the flags, so that QT Player can pick up the gamma settings.
I even think that the title was similar to yours - "washed out video." I do not recall the OP's screen name, but believe that they were female. The thread starts out with the observations, and it is not until down-thread that she (?) reveals the research and the solution. It will still be on the forum, and you could even filter on Bill Hunt, if needed, as I did comment in that thread.
