2. Re: My CS5 quit working in 64 mode
Nzeltvay May 15, 2010 6:51 PM (in response to Zeno Bokor)My question has been answered to a certain extent. After reading some of the other shut downs of CS5 and involvement of the Wacom Tablets and Drivers, I found that it is a problem for me. If I disconnect the Wacom tablet and drivers CS5 in 64 mode opens with no problem. No matter which driver of the Wacom tablet is downloaded if I go out of Photoshop (literally shutting it down) and go into painter then try to reopen CS5 in 64 mode it will not open. 32 mode of Photoshop will but not the 64 mode. If you use the Wacom tablet in Photoshop without going out of the program it will work. I have sent an e-mail to Wacom with what I have encountered. I don't feel this is a Photoshop problem since Photoshop runs just fine it just doesn't like the Wacom drivers. Hopefully, Wacom will get this resolved.

3. Re: My CS5 quit working in 64 mode
JL Edens Jun 8, 2010 6:12 AM (in response to Nzeltvay)I've had a similar problem. Neither Photoshop nor Lightroom 2.6 would open when I had the Wacom tablet driver for the Intuos 4 Wireless installed on my laptop running Win 7. If I removed the Wacom driver, I could run both programs. On my older Vista desktop machine, I could run both programs with the Wacom tablet driver installed and everything worked well. After going around a bit with the Wacom help representative, he suggested I run the Adobe programs in 32-bit on my laptop. That worked fine. However, I want to be able to run my Adobe programs in 64 bit. Plus I don't know how to get Lightroom 2.7 to install the 32-bit version on my laptop since it detects a 64-bit machine and automatically installs that one. This seems a strange problem since Wacom is so often used with Adobe products. I hope Wacom addresses the issue soon.

Noel Carboni Jun 8, 2010 6:23 AM (in response to Nzeltvay)With the release of something as big as Photoshop CS5 only a little over a month ago, I/O device manufacturers are still actively scrambling to update their stuff. The dust will settle in time.
Some folks have embraced 64 bit computing for many years, and some are being dragged kicking and screaming into the future even today. Note, for example, how many packages didn't come with 64 bit Shell Extensions (e.g., right-click menus in the 64 bit Explorer) until Microsoft actually made it impossible to run the 32 bit Explorer on Windows 7 x64 at the time of release.
The funniest thing is that for the most part the source code for an application for 64 bits can be virtually identical to the code for 32 bits. You have to have taken some bad shortcuts in the 32 bit code (like stuffing pointers in integers) to not be able to almost instantly build for 64 bits.
The 64 bit / 32 bit thing really has uncovered some interesting blind spots in various development organizations. In a sense, the sloppier developers have been outed.

5. Re: My CS5 quit working in 64 mode
Nzeltvay Jun 8, 2010 8:51 AM (in response to JL Edens)I have discovered a work-around for my problem and so far it works. First, I did find that the older driver did work with X64 mode and my Wacom tablet after I reinstalled it. However, I did hear from Wacom and was told that I should use the latest driver. What I did was remove the Wacom tablet driver then I opened Photoshop CS5 in 64 mode. I went into my preference menu and selected Plug-Ins. I went to the additional plug in folder and added the Wacom tablet. It is listed as C:\Program Files (X86)\Tablet\Wacom\. I then went back to the Wacom site and downloaded the latest driver. Now I am able to use my Wacom tablet with 64 mode with no problem. I cannot guarantee that this will work for everyone because it appears that the computer you are on and programs that you are running appear to cause a lot of problems. I have been in contact with Wacom with my temporary solution and I forwarded the problem that J L Edens encountered as well. Hopefully, Wacom can come up with a solution. I never had a problem with CS4 but at that time I was using an Intuos 2 tablet and older drivers since this new driver had not been available for download yet.

6. Re: My CS5 quit working in 64 mode
JL Edens Jun 8, 2010 2:32 PM (in response to Nzeltvay)I uninstalled the program and then Wacom didn't show up under Tablet.
Is there a way to just uninstall the driver? After uninstalling the
tablet and choosing Tablet as a plug-in for 64-bit PS, then installing
the latest Wacom driver, PS still wouldn't run. Thanks for the
suggestion--I'd appreciate any others.

JL Edens Jun 10, 2010 2:57 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thanks for your input. I'm surprised a company as large and successful
as Wacom seems to have this blind spot about 64/32 bit.

8. Re: My CS5 quit working in 64 mode
cpendlay Jun 10, 2010 9:39 AM (in response to Nzeltvay)If you go to the Wacom European forum you will see that there have been serious issues with Wacom drivers for a while. I don't think it is just a 64 bit problem. I know I have had numerous problems with Wacom drivers for my Intuous4 tablet, it works great for a while and then things start going wrong and I have to reinstall the drivers. This has been the last 4 or 5 versions at least. I use Corel Painter a LOT and had set up my tablet for Painter, I saved the preferences file and after a week or so I lost my tilt capabilities in Painter. It turned out that the preferences file had become corrupt along with the driver so I had to dump the file and reinstall drivers then set up the tablet all over again. After doing this several times I gave up and learned keyboard shortcuts instead.
In CS5 I find that I lost the tilt occassionally using the new mixer brush or at least in the little preview window that shows you tilt, pressure, and rotation. Usually clicking on the icon to turn off the preview and then clicking it again solves the problem.
I don't know why there are so many problems with the Wacom drivers but there are. I hope they manage to resolve them soon, I know they do admit there is a problem and they are working on it.
I would love to be able to set up all of the tablet buttons and the wheel, it would make life a lot easier, but having to redo it on a monthly basis is just more work than I'm willing to put in. The preference file utility is a great idea but that file becomes corrupt along with the drivers so that makes it useless.
As far as only uninstalling the driver and not the tablet, as far as I know the program file and driver file are integrated into one so that is not possible.
Claudia
