Add a positive rating system to website

    blue_vision Level 1

I would like to add a button to my website that allows people to vote in a positive manner only and not via stars. How facebook has the "likes this" or a person can vote on a forum that they like or dislike a post (only without the dislike button). Is this possible and is there a simple solution for it? I've googled but I seem to be getting the wrong search terms as I seem to only find a star rating system.

      Thanks!

oh awesome, that's actually even better then I was hoping for...

          Thanks!

the thumbsup recommendation might look nice, but it's limited to SQlite database (which may not be supported on all hosts) and it costs $$ to use.

Alternatively you can create your own thumbs up using the server behaviors already built into DW:

Use a insert record server behavior to insert the thumbs up vote by a user and wrap the server behavior in a conditional region so that only logged in users can apply a thumbs up. Additionally you can wrap the insert behavior in another conditional region where if the logged in user has already made a thumbs up then they can not add another thumbs up to the post to prevent individual users from voting on a single post multiple times. Then create a filtered recordset to display the number of thumbs up votes for the post and then use the server behavior to display the total number from the recordet (which would be the number of thumbs up votes for the post).

This is very, very simple to develop and it's using the built in server behaviors of DW (which you've already paid for... there's no reason to pay for a service if you're already paying for development tools you currently posses. Unless, of course, you don't want to learn how to use the tools you paid for! )

Honestly, it probably took me longer to write this post than it would take to develop the feature using the server behaviors built into Dreamweaver. We're talking about a 5 min. development here using the tools you already have and paid for!!!

So, I'm now totally confused. This is my hosting plan:

              http://machighway.com/hostingplans.php

              (large)

Will that support the thumbs up in Nancy's link?

I'm not against exploring what you are saying IPHP and I'll look into it more tomorrow when I have a clear head but in the meantime... can I achieve the  thumbs up template with machighway?

              Thanks!

My quote mentions the database that is required, your link has a list of databases provided by your host. Is there any reason that you can not do your own research in this regard now that you have the necessary information?

                  Why yes there is...

This is a forum where people go to ask questions in regards to their problems. ANYBODY could eventually google and do enough research to find their answers without the need to ever post on a forum in most cases but instead we try to avoid the hassle and ask here where another person might know the answer off the top of their experienced head.

In turn if I see somebody ask a question... even if it's in the adobe help files and smack-dab infront of them.... I'll still try to do my part and help out without the need to give them the google dummy link.

The reason I wasn't sure based off the list is this statement off Nancy's link:

"You will also need SQLite, but that should not be a problem since the SQLite extension is enabled by default as of PHP 5. I tested it with SQLite 2.8.17."

I don't know crap about SQLite, PHP, or extensions for that matter... I'm just trying to find an easy solution to add a button to my website. I see that it doesn't list SQLite on Machighway but it does mention PHP alot and this comment says it's enabled by default in PHP 5 so that's where I'm not understanding if it's compatible or not.

                  Thanks.

Call your web host. It is not clear from their site which versions of PHP or MySQL they run.

Thanks! I just submitted a ticket to them...

Unfortunately you missed the line from your previous quote which would answer your question without submitting a support ticket to your host.

You will also need SQLite, but that should not be a problem since the SQLite extension is enabled by default as of PHP 5. I tested it with SQLite 2.8.17.

You can retrieve all the information you need by running phpinfo() on your server.

Simply run a phpinfo() on your server to see if SQLite is supported.

There's no problem with holding someone's hand in a Dreamweaver forum for a Dreamweaver question. Unfortunately you aren't asking a Dreamweaver question anymore, you're now asking a question about your host and their support for a third party service. Having said that, it might be best to ask the third party or your host if the service you're inquiring about is possible if you can't determine it on your own as instructed by the third party provider. If you want to find out how to develop the feature in Dreamweaver then I would have no problem holding your hand in a Dreamweaver forum.

Sorry I even mentioned anything in the first place, blue_vision. I'm sure you would of been much happier to purchase the recommended feature and discovered on your own after purchasing it that it was not supported by your host's database. I'll make sure to remember that the next time you inquire about something and you're recommended a limited service.

                        best regards

I asked a question that is related to dreamweaver as I build my sites with dreamweaver. I didn't know it's a server thing, php thing, or anything else when I asked.

Nancy provided a link. I said "thanks"!

You came in and gave alternative thought. I responded...

"I'm not against exploring what you are saying IPHP and I'll look into it more tomorrow when I have a clear head but in the meantime... can I achieve the  thumbs up template with machighway?"

I never decided or stated which way I was fully going to go but before I moved on to anything else I wanted to find out if Nancy's link was an option. I didn't understand all the lingo of requirements vs what my server plan offered so I posted the link.

I never dreamed I would be defending myself for doing any of that and I never said I wasn't interested in learning how to do it with dreamweaver as you mentioned but I simply wanted to find out if Nancy's suggestion would work.

                          Thanks
