Try downloading from this link http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/shockwave/default/english/win95nt/latest/Shockwave_Install er_Slim.exe; save it to disk, then close all browser windows and run the downloaded installer.
After completing the installation, can you see Shockwave Player on this page http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ ?
Thanks very much for your help. I toiled late into the night trying to sort this out. Eventually I downloaded from FileHippo but during the installation there was an error message stating that a file could not be found. (SwDir.dll). I was invited to "Ignore" which I did and the installation completed successfully. It seems that in a number of places on the Adobe site it states that Shockwave is located in C:\Windows\system32\Adobe\ but on my computer it is in C:\Windows\sysWOW64\Adobe and this is where SwDir.dll resides. The odd thing is that first time round Shockwave installed without any problems. Anyway all seems to be working according to the test that you provided a link for so thanks.
