1. Re: File is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.
Chris Cox May 18, 2010 5:01 PM (in response to espo_74)The file is corrupted, probably by a disk error, but you might be able to open it in an older version of Photoshop (that doesn't read whatever part was corrupted and can skip over the corruption). Worst case you can probably open it in an application that doesn't read layers and recover the composite image.

2. Re: File is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.
Alex Burr Sep 21, 2010 7:06 AM (in response to espo_74)I have had this exact same problem happen to me twice....
I spent all day Monday working on a Photoshop comp for a large project, only to open it Tuesday and receive the "not compatible with this version" error message.
I have not viewed the file in any other software. If the file is corrupted, then it is Photoshop corrupting it. There must be a fix for this somewhere, because if this software continues to destroy my work, I will be switching to GIMP.
Windows 7, Photoshop CS4 64-bit. Saving to local drive, so it's not a network problem. I don't have an earlier version of Photoshop available.

dec9 Sep 21, 2010 7:35 AM (in response to Alex Burr)Scan your hard drive for bad sectors would be a first step.

Noel Carboni Sep 21, 2010 8:35 AM (in response to Alex Burr)Generally speaking, Photoshop is not known to destroy files. The problem, as implied above, is more likely a basic problem with your computer.
You can check your Windows event logs to see if you find disk errors.

Bill Hunt Sep 21, 2010 1:08 PM (in response to Alex Burr)Welcome to the forum.
I've been using PS from the first day that it hit the PC platform, and have only had it destroy one file. That happened when another program updated, while PS was doing a Save_As, and the machine crashed. So, even that one time was not PS's fault.
I agree with others that you likely have an issue with your HDD, or its controller, or some other program causing you issues. You mention that it is local, so I assume that it's internal, as I was going to warn against doing Saves to USB 2.0 externals. Especially with faster computers, the USB 2.0 connection can be too slow, and Delayed Write Failures can occur. This is more of an issue with larger files, like with a video editor.
If you HDD checks out perfectly, look to see what else you have running like Windows Indexing, or a real-time Anti-Virus scanner, as they can really get in the way.
Good luck,
Hunt

ElKoala Oct 1, 2010 7:13 AM (in response to espo_74)Maybe the solution finally comes. I googled for a fix and found this!
Advanced PSD Repair
APSR is the best and freetool to recover corrupt Photoshop image(PSD, PDD) files. It uses advanced technologies to scan the corrupt or damaged Photoshop image files and recover your data in them as much as possible, so to minimize the loss in file corruption.

I tested with one PSD that got the "isnt compatible with this version" problem, and really worked.
Ah, a alternate Fix is open the file in Illustrator. I was able to render it (no open with object layers, but like they say ahead, u can get the composite image! )
Hope help ya, man!
