I'm new to illustrator, and I'm trying to recreate the Orange Lanten symbol for a hoodie. I want to make a single colour proof for the printer. To do that I need to know how to cut the symbol out of a circle. Here's an example of the symbol, but instead of a white background and black lines, I would like to do a gold circle with the line cut away so I do not need to print 2 colours on the shirts.
All strokes need to be converted to outlines. Then you use the pathfinder (the palette, not the effects) to combine the symbol. After that use the pathfinder-button Exclude to punch the symbol out of the circle. Assuming that you are using Illustrator CS4 or 5. Otherwise you have to press ALT when clicking the pathfinder button.
It's not even necessary to have a compound path for this. Fill the circle with black. Fill the symbol with white. Print it. Use the print for the gold ink plate. Unless you set it up as a separate spot color, white does not print; it's the same thing as saying "no ink."
Thank you, looks fantastic!
