Emergency! Looking for Remote App. for editing with CS4

    jbandy Community Member

      HELP!

I’m attempting to find a Remote Software application that will  allow me to control a video editing computer from home and edit video  over the internet. The computer I’m trying to control is a Matrox  Axio LE running Windows Vista 64.  The editing software I’m using is  Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.

So far, I have tried using Windows Desktop Connection and Radmin  3.4.  Both have been unsuccessful.  I’ve been running into problems with  the Audio and Video.  I have not been able to see any video over the  connection with the exception of a couple frames every now and then.  I  have not been able to hear any audio off of a Premiere Pro timeline  because all the audio from Premiere is coming out of our Matrox Axio LE  breakout box.

My question is how can I receive audio and video over a remote  connection?  Does anyone have a recommendations for programs to use and  if so have you used it?  Is there anyway to lower the bit rate or  quality of the video in premiere so it could be viewed over the remote  connection?  For the audio, how would I route the audio out of the  breakout box so that it could be heard over the remote connection?  At  the very least I need to get this working! With Radmin, I tried  routing the audio out of the Axio LE breakout box back into the  computer’s microphone input.  Then enable a voice chat to hear the audio  but unfortunately it did not work.

Lastly are there any Matrox solutions for laptop editing?  If I  could have a laptop for home use to work on projects with, then I could  bring the project files back onto the Axio LE machine for further  editing later.  I think this would work.  Has anyone used a MX02 with a  laptop running Windows Vista 64 bit or Windows 7 64 bit while using  Adobe Premiere Pro CS4?  How does it work?

I need answers on this as soon as possible.

      Thank you!

This is a lost cause IMO.

The only practical solution is to store your whole project and media on an external disk or swappable internal disk and take the disk along. It may be better to use PR settings and bypass anything Matrox.

I think you are out of luck my friend. Seems like you are trying to drive a bus through the eye of a needle on this one.

In most NLE applications there is a huge amount of data being pushed through most of the systems bussess and subsystems... and I dont see any way for you to push that data over one little internet connection, battling with traffic from millions of other users and a vast amount of other interferences.

The fact that you actually got a couple of frames of video to playback can almost be seen as a technilogical breakthrough in my opinion.

Have you tried doing this on the local LAN? what was your results?

You could try TeamViewer (www.teamviewer.com). It's free for personal use, and is the best remote desktop app I have tried so far.

Audio may be a bit tricky, as it seems like you would have to use a microphone laying close to the speakers (of the Matrox Axio LE), or cable from line out to mic in (be careful).

Anyway, I don't think playback will be very smooth, but maybe optimizing TeamViewer for speed will help.

                function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

You don't push all that data through the internet connection. Remote desktop apps send only a copy (low quality) of the desktop plus some control signals (for example mouse usage), and if you are lucky, the sound.

I understand that yes, I use Remote Desktop everyday, but just for access to Windows Servers. And even then, over the local lan, mouse movements, opening windows and other general tasks gets quite choppy and sluggish.

But I'm thinking for PPro and trying to send full video frames, over the internet and expecting real time (or even close to realtime) interaction and playback is a bit hopefull.

Surely editing remotly would not be possible?  perhaps a click here or there, wait a bit for the remote machine to perform the task, wait for the update to the remote desktop, perform next task. Or am I missing something?

                  Cheers,

If it 'works' at all, it will be with the speed of an invalid snail on disability pension, that breaks before cornering, in extreme slomo, like from 5,000 fps to around 10 fps. Uneditable.

                      I use www.logmein.com

BUT you cannot edit video, because just as everyone has pointed out there is just to much info to send.  I use to to start projects rendering, or to check up on them if I let it go over a weekend.  I can build and burn basic DVD's remotely, but that is about it.  Cannot actually edit remotly.

So getting video to play either won't work at all or not well enough to

edit.  What about the audio only, will I have the same issue, still to much

information to be transmitted over the internet?  Does anyone know how to

                        get this to work?

We are not using a LAN to edit so that won't work.

The reason I ask about the MX02 is that we use Matrox project presets for

720p 59.94 video.  If I bypass the Matrox settings will I still be able to

open that project on my Axio LE which is using the Matrox hardware?

For the frames of video that actually came through, it was when the CTI was

still (not moving) on the timeline or when I was scrubbing through video.

Has anyone here used or know anyone who has used a MX02 mini with a Windows

                        Laptop?

                        Thank you for your replies.

I don’t think you will get it to work. Remote Desktop was never intended for processor heavy applications as far as I know.

Can't help you on the Matrox questions as we use Blackmagic (www.blackmagic-design.com) products for all our AV I/O.

Using a fast external to "migrate" the Project from computer to computer will work fine. I do it for about 70% of my Projects.

The tricks are to use fast connections, FW-800, or better, and to set the external's drive letter assignment the same in the OS of each computer.

While not the ultimate setup, keep all necessary media (or better yet, Copies) on that external, and also locate your Scratch Disks there.

Works fine with my FW-800 externals, and eSATA (or USB 3, etc.) would be better and faster.

                              Good luck,

Even if you were connected by Fiber DIRECTLY from/to the source you would still be limited by less than the speed of light, latency, and other issues. I too use remote desktop everyday, what you are asking is just not possible (without throwing an immense amount of money and resources) with today's technologies.

Though I already have a solid answer for my question.  We here in the office have been wondering what sort of bandwidth would need to be available in order to edit over the internet remotely.  Does anyone know?

Something in the order of 50 MB/s (400 Gbps).

Older post but Im looking into another solution for something and found this interesting....

You simply cant do it remoting in....  but I would however recommend sending the project to a cloud where you can simply download the project for editing from anywhere, so it is available remotely (anywhere you go) and you download it locally to edit.  It can also be done by mounting a server drive and downloading from there...  Internet speeds are not quite there yet to do uncompressed editing over your home internet service.... You could even then use a simple sync program to replace the file in the cloud with your edited one or even make an "edited" folder and leave the original alone so you dont have to upload it when your done manually but set up a time for it to auto sync.

Just a server with say 1TB of space and a decent speed internet service will allow this to happen.  Why remote in when you can bring it to you!

                                        Good luck.
