Probably, the easiest and most flexible way to design and implement your custom playback controls would be to do it in Flash.
The advantage is that you can easily import to your player class any assets that you create visually in Flash, including imported images. You can also use ActionScript drawing APIs to draw the Sprites directly in your player class.

Since then the OSMF has added plenty of documentation, examples, and tutorials.
Just spend some time exploring http://www.osmf.org
You'll find more than enough guidance over there.
As to your specific question - how to connect - you do it by calling MediaPlayer's methods and properties: play(), pause(), stop(), etc.
But once again, the best way to approach the task would be to learn the essence.
