DDSaur May 22, 2010 5:36 AM (in response to thepopoman)I see the same problem here. Despite the documentation (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405072.html), it appears the location of the TWAIN plugin indicates that it is 32-bit only.

FrogMN Jun 6, 2010 5:03 PM (in response to Tai Lao)That link is exactly where I went to download what I thought was going to be a compatible 64 bit TWAIN plugin , but the download specifically says its a 32 bit Twain Plug in and Photoshop CS5 Extended is not listing it in the import - export menu list, as it did nicely in CS4 (a different TWAIN plugin for CS4)

The latest Epson software for the 4990 you mentioned does not include a 64-bit version of the TWAIN driver, it only includes PPC and i386 (i.e. 32-bit) code. They call it Universal, but that doesn't imply 64-bit necessarily.
To scan in Photoshop using this software, you will need to launch Photoshop in 32-bit mode, but as others have pointed out, there are other ways to scan as well.

Well, maybe. I followed Adobe's installation instructions for the TWAIN plugin. Then, I rebooted my Mac. Then, restarted Pshop in 32-bit mode, and I still can't get it to see my LiDE 600F scanner. It doesn't show-up anywhere.
Granted, there are other ways to scan, but one of the long-time advantages of Pshop was the ability to scan directly from within the app.

That was/is an illusion. The actual scanning is done by the scanner software, you're just using Photoshop to call the scanner manufacturer's software. You're tying up a $900 application just to call on other software.
If you scan outside of Photoshop, you can continue working in Ps while the scanning is done in the background.

16. Re: There is no 64 bit TWAIN plug-in for Photoshop CS5?
The Real Thorzdad Jun 15, 2010 10:02 AM (in response to Tai Lao)That's a developer's distinction. What matters is how the app appears to be functioning to the user. From a user's standpoint, the app is doing the scanning, regardless of whether it is calling outside software. It enhances the user experience. To say that, now, a user needs to scan outside of Photoshop, is a reduction in convenience and value in the eyes of the user. And it doesn't frakking matter how much the app costs.

It has nothing to do with "now". It has always been inefficient to tie up Photoshop to scan.
No "developer distinction" either, just common sense.

PDFergusonJun 15, 2010 10:54 AM (in response to The Real Thorzdad)
If you're not seeing your scanner in Photoshop CS5, make sure the TWAIN driver for it has been properly installed. To check whether you have the TWAIN software installed, look in /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources for a file named CanoScan LiDE 600F.ds. The Canon website can be a little confusing, make sure you download and install the LiDE 600F Scanner Driver package (as opposed to the CanoScan software package.)
I have tested the LiDE 600F, and it does work in Photoshop CS5--in 32-bit only, because the Canon TWAIN driver for that scanner does not include 64-bit code.
With regard to the arguments for or against scanning in Photoshop, I think you should use whatever fits your workflow best. If you prefer scanning within Photoshop, that's fine; if you prefer using a different application, that's fine too.

19. Re: There is no 64 bit TWAIN plug-in for Photoshop CS5?
The Real Thorzdad Jun 15, 2010 11:06 AM (in response to Tai Lao)No. It's not common sense. It's only your argument. Please don't confuse the two.
It comes down to workflow. I'm working on a project in Photoshop and I need to scan something for my project. Simply do the Import>scanner move. No need to leave the app. It's not "tying down" anything.

Ah, but you are leaving the application in order to use the scanner's through the plug-in. The difference is that when you use the TWAIN plug-in, you can't use Photoshop at the same time, so you are tying it down.
When you use a utility like VueScan, the image will open in Photoshop automatically, without your having lost control of Photoshop at all.
Please understand that I'm not "arguing", I'm just giving you advice, as one Photoshop user to another. I have no affiliation with Adobe whatsoever. Whether you choose to follow the advice or not is immaterial to me.

21. Re: There is no 64 bit TWAIN plug-in for Photoshop CS5?
BuckyThreadkilller Jun 15, 2010 1:46 PM (in response to Tai Lao)I scan art for low rez FPO and as base tracing art for illustrations, not high end reproduction quality work.
It maybe inefficient to tie-up Photoshop to scan in your case, but when I'm scanning art, it's for immediate placement into Ps. It's inefficent to jump out of Ps, open the scanning software, make the scan, and the close out of the scanning software and reopen (not relaunch) Ps. Opening Ps, importing the scan via a Ps menu is much more efficient for my style workflow.
To have this option simply eliminated doesn't make Ps easier to use for those who scan this way.

Just to be clear, this option has not been eliminated in Photoshop; you can still scan directly in Photoshop within the constraints I've mentioned elsewhere recently, but will post again:
(1) You need to install the optional TWAIN plugin, which you can download from the Adobe web site. This plugin is not installed by default. Make sure you have the correct TWAIN plugin, the TWAIN plugin from CS4 will not work in Photoshop CS5, and vice versa.
(2) In Photoshop CS5, you can scan in 64-bit mode if you are running Snow Leopard (10.6.x), and the scanner manufacturer has released a 64-bit compatible TWAIN driver. So far, most TWAIN drivers are not 64-bit compatible (the only ones I know of are for more recent Canon scanners.) Check the scanner manufacturer's web site for the latest information. You can launch Photoshop in 32-bit mode to use a TWAIN driver that is not 64-bit compatible.

Yes, it does kinda stink, but unfortunately there's nothing we can do inside Photoshop. TWAIN drivers run in the host application's process space, and if that process is 64-bit, the TWAIN driver must have 64-bit code in it. Most of them do not at this point.
If you are unhappy about this, you should contact your scanner manufacturer to let them know that you would like 64-bit compatible TWAIN software on Mac OS X.

33. Re: There is no 64 bit TWAIN plug-in for Photoshop CS5?
PDFergusonSep 13, 2010 12:41 PM (in response to trish r)
What's probably happening is Photoshop is starting up in 64-bit mode, but the CanoScan LiDE 600f TWAIN driver is 32-bit only. In that situation, the scanner will not be listed in Photoshop's File > Import submenu; only 64-bit enabled scanners will be listed (if you are running 10.5 rather than 10.6, you will see no scanners listed because Photoshop CS5 only supports 64-bit scanning on 10.6. or later).
If you want to scan directly into Photoshop from your LiDE 600f, you will need to start Photoshop up in 32-bit mode. I have an LiDE sitting on my desk, and it works fine in Photoshop CS5 in 32-bit mode.
