Here are more video tutorials that cover how to do this:
Working with video and audio (also by Doug):
This video is part of the Flash Catalyst Feature Tour series you can find here: http://tv.adobe.com/show/flash-catalyst-cs5-feature-tour/.
Adding video and sound to Flash Catalyst project:
This video is part of the Rich Internet Application series found here: http://www.adobe.com/education/instruction/teach/ria.html).
There is also a help topic on adding video and sound:
Thank you for those. I got a few tricks that I will use later.
Maybe I should do better at explaining myself so that I'm clear with my needs.
In the original video of Dougs at the 0:38 mark, what he explains that he set up is a system where when the user clicks the different videos on the right datalist and when they click any of the videos, the video then plays in the media section with the description of that video underneath.
Basically, he explained it in a way that got me thinking it was kind of like how youtube does it with the clicking a new video and it changing.
In those tutorials, they talk about making a photo gallery and if you just use videos rather than photos, it'll give you what I'm looking for.
However, in videos 21-22 they talk about connecting (in flash Builder) to an XML file, but I don't know where they got that file from. My project didn't automatically create it and I didn't see a tutorial where they created it.
Good, I'm glad you found those, I suspected that's the effect you were looking for. Let me ask some team members about the XML and get back to you. Thanks for posting & clarifying.
You are correct that the project did not create the XML file that Flex project links to. Just like you would have to create the thumbnails or video clips that the portfolio would use, so do you have to define the structure and create the XML file. If you download the sample files that accompany the tutorial, you can find the XML file they refer to in the following directory structure: Photo_gallery-bind > src > assets > filmRoll.xml. You can open this file in either Flash Builder or your favorite text editor (say Dreamweaver). I find viewing XML documents in Firefox very useful, since it will also make sure that the XML file is valid. Having invalid XML is often a source of errors when working with XML.
Once that file is open, you can inspect the structure and the data. The short answer is where you find <FRimage> </FRimage> nodes, that reference the large image, you can replace the filename to the image to the filename of the FLV video. You will have to do some additional work to have the video component use this URL.
A good reference on XML is : XML: Visual QuickStart Guide, 2nd Edition You can also visit, http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=31286&seqNum=8, for a nice list of links on XML.
Hope this points you in the right direction.
Looks like I have some learning to do. Mucho gracias. Hopefully, my inexperience in coding doesn't hurt me too bad.
Becoming comfortable with XML will be a great benefit to your skill set. Many tools use it as a method for data.
That xml file is not in the gallery. I opened it in Builder and clicked into the images folder and there is no filmRoll.xml
What did I do wrong?
If I go to http://tv.adobe.com/show/rich-internet-applications-101/ then select episode 21, on the right of the screen there should be a link Download Sample files. The filmroll.xml file should be in the Flash_Builder_Projects/Photo_gallery-bind/src/assets/ directory.
I have attached the file as a reference.
filmRoll.xml 5.8 K
Looks like I'm stuck.
I changed the the xml to look like this to fit my needs. From my understanding, the names really don't matter since the program can call it whatever it wants.
I was able to successfully use the xml file for my horizontal scroll thingy and it works great. Added the names and the pictures.
My problem is when I have to mess with the video. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I keep getting errors in the code. Access of undefined property FRvideo_type, list1, FRimage_type.
Here's the code that's giving me an error:
protected function list_changeHandler():void
FRimage_type=list1.selectedItem as FRvideo_type;
I tried defining it like he does in the video, but to no avail. I looked over his code again and couldn't even find a list1, or a FRimage_type.
Did I screw up THAT bad? ha
No. Day job got in the way. I'll try to look at this weekend
I understand that. I work mid-afternoon to midnight every day it seems. I really do appreciate the help though. Thanks.
I hate being persistant, but just bumping to the top.
I haven't looked at it the past week until last night. I attempted to mess with the FRimage_value names because I really think that is the problem seeing as tehre is no reference to that in the xml file. But then again, there is no reference to that in their xml file either and it seemed to work for them.
Can you zip up the project and upload it? It might make easier to work through the issue. Thanks.
couldn't figure out how to attach so i just uploaded to my website
