PE8 CRASH AFTER CRASH AFTER CRASH its getting outta HAND! HELP

    MAKORAPA

      Guys

My system set up is as follows

      Summarized:

      win7 64 bit

      PrE8 + latest update

Graphics card ATI MOBILITY radeon 4570 UPDATED TO LATEST DRIVER

      8G RAM

      Peripherals

      NIKON D90

SONY HDR HC7 HDV 1080I MINI DV

      SEAGATE FREEAGENT GO 500GB

JMCR SD/MMC SCSI DISK for READYBOOST

Downloaded and used sysinternal :  process mon and pro exp all reveals normal activity on my system

      PROBLEMS

Intermittent crashes while editing , moving clips around , additing effects, clip in clip , saving work and even closing PE8 it crashes.

PE8/Adobe has sent a gezillion crash files to adobe HQ.

      Last two projects : (a) 15 minutes and (b) <1minute

I am yet to complete a movie.

      I receive low resource messages

Promon by sysinternals has clocked my memory at 6gb when running PrE8 my cpu usage is low and stable no more than 5 - 10%

Commit history has run in the high 90% or 16000000 at that point PrE8 collapsed

I have had project open and let it run to see if it could self destruct - nope! Only time it crashes is when I edit/move clips/close/add effects

what have I done so far without improvement

      1. uninstalled Pr8 and reinstalled and updated to 8.01
      2. replaced ram this week , took my BSOD away
      3. ran numerous scandisks and disc defrags on both internal and external HD
      4. Increase virtual memory/page file + set to no page file + set it to auto manage page file : no improvement
      5. started new projects
      6. uninstalled programs which i deemed to be unecessary for my day to day use.
      7. quicktime 9 updated
      8. exclusively use Elements to capture footage from NIKON and SONY
      9. taken AVG off my system
      10. update ATI MOB RADEON DRIVER

This becoming hugely frustrating as I seem to be out of options. I am about to take my notebook and hit the supplier with it as they have guaranteed me stable hardware.

      Ideas or suggestions

      Tx

What Project Preset are you using with the Nikon MJPEG files?

Which MJPEG CODEC do you have installed?

Am I correct that you have a single 500GB internal HDD?

How is the external used by your system?

How many programs/Processed does Task Manager show running?

            Good luck,

                Thanks Guys

I will work through each possible solution and report back. In mean while Ive answered Bills quesitons. \

What Project Preset are you using with the Nikon MJPEG files?

standard PrE8 preset, Motion, Image control and opacity.

Which MJPEG CODEC do you have installed?

nikon nef raw, nx view , nikon transfer , i generally use PrE8 organizer to import and handle any photos.

i have noticed that my last project consists of VOB and AVI files , the photos were handled by nikon transfer and converted to jpeg through the said software ie nikon transfer.

Am I correct that you have a single 500GB internal HDD? yes I have on internal 500HDD

How is the external used by your system? file storage - not for the footage , its more of a file storage device.

How many programs/Processed does Task Manager show running? 60+ including windows stuff ie svhost etc

                    Okay

I may be on to something  here. I have managed to illicit a crash.

                    steps

                    1. open project
                    2. PrE8 looks for certain files , skip as these files are not needed
                    3. wait for program to open
                    4. want to start working on closing gaps
                    5. right click on gap : close gap option doesnt work
                    6. so i manually start dragging the clips one by one to close gap.
                    7. after each move i save
                    8. after the 3 or 4 move and save the program hangs at 50% of saving project.
                    9. just prior to the hang the monitor panel goes blank ie

will keep trying to find problem

That sounds like some of the crashes that people were getting with the original release of PrE 8, prior to the update. Most of their issues were related to the ATI, or nVidia drivers, and the interaction of PrE 8 and those drivers. PrE 8.0.1 seemed to fix those issues. Do you have the PrE 8.0.1 update?

                      Good luck,

Bill yes I do have update 8.01.

seemed to have found a work around for last crash but PrE8 still crashes when closing project/program.

It could be because your CPU doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

                          http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/systemreqs/

The Intel i7 Q720 cpu is usually a notebook cpu. I'm not saying that is the problem, but it could well be.

I am also assuming this is a notebook pc, so another thing could be that if you're running on battery the CPU could be throttling down to save battery and thus also become even slower.

                          Hope this helps.

                            Hello,

Quad core, 2x2 GIG ram, 7200 rpm drive, Windows 7 with latest updates.

I think I may have found a fix for this crashing issue

I have been having the same issues as mentioned in this thread.  I pondered for a bit and said "What is the most common thing that just about every PC has on it" and that is Virus Protection Software!  So I rebooted to the Windows 7 OS (dual boot system) and noticed a slow boot.  I unplugged my internet cable, disabled the firewall and then set Norton 360 to shut off for five hours.  Like magic, no more issues!  My PC is blazing now with no hicups at all.  I hope that this is a fix that will stick.

I still have to test this more more and will do so tonight by recording a new video from my Cannon ZR900 directly to PE8.

In the meantime, please reply to this thread with the type of virus software you are running and your results so we can fix this issue.  There is no doubt that virus protection software slows down a PC's performance quite a bit. Ultimately it would be best to have PE8 on a PC that does not go on the internet so that all the PC resourses are dedicated to running intensive software like PE8.

                            Thanks,

                            Stephen

                              Steven,

                              Welcome to the forum.

You have found one strong possibility for at least system hangs - active AV software. That is one of the things that I recommend turning off, when editing video, along with pop-up blockers, and spysweepers. Obviously, as you point out, having an Internet presence, while all defenses are down, is not a wise idea. Though I'm also behind a hardware firewall, I do NOT do anything on the Internet, or with my POP accounts, while editing.

I cover this, plus other possibilities in this ARTICLE.

Good luck, and thanks for reporting,

Thanks again! I do appreciate all you input.

                                Let me give an update.

I uninstalled AVG entirely and run ESET from the web daily, this is done from 00h00 to 06h00 while Im catching up on sleep.

I have had new ram installed ... since then i have only had 1 BSOD! How fortunate.

I contacted my local Adobe support , they are still getting back to me. In mean while I purchase an eSATA 500gb 7200rpm drive. I transfered all my footage over this and deleted all my pending projects.

I then bit the bullet and called the ADOBE UK (im in South Africa) , they routed me to their tech support whom logged my info and problem. I must say they very concerned and very helpful. They emailed me a "query number" which is web based , this allowed me to log issues simultaneously with them. This way they could advise. They did UNFORTUNATELY route me to this forum and elements site. I explained that I had performed all the required changes.

Couple days later they call me (on my mobile) while I was sitting at a coffee shop on the wifi hotspot. They "dialed-in" to my system and poked and proded with no success. The lady doing the tech support then poked in event view, dxdiag etc. She downloaded all events and my sys info. I also pointed her to all the crash reports PE* generated.

Once she gathered all my info she uploaded to the support page and escalated to her seniors. They are due to get back to me shortly.

Once I have light on the matter I will post in forum.

                                Please keep all suggestions coming.

                                  Hello Bill,

Thanks for the info I should have read the link that you added to the previous post which has some very useful information.  I know that this PE8 crashing issue is causing a lot of people to hate Adobe when in reality it may be something else.  Just search on PE8 crashing and you will be overwhelmed with flamed responses about the software.  This is one of those darn side effects us PC users have to endure with an OS like windows because you can install just about anything in a PC. This makes for what seems like an unlimited amount of different hardware and software configs.  You have to take the good with the bad weather you have a PC or a MAC because both have good and bad points.

MAKORAPA Thanks for the info, it's nice to know that they are concerned and rightfully should be.  It is very likely that many of the complaints were never taken up directly with Adobe support.  This is where a forum can help by sharing experiences with each other.  All I can say is I am happy I don't write code nowadays.  Can't wait to hear what they say.

                                  Thank you,

                                    Stephen,

You are correct here. It is also what makes troubleshooting issues (especially remotely via a forum) so difficult. One can have almost anything and it can be configured in myriad ways. Mac's are more limited, and are often easier to diagnose, due to the control that Apple exerts - limited, only approved hardware, and somewhat limited software. There are fewer settings, so an NLE, like FCP (made by Apple for Mac;s) should have fewer issues, as there are far fewer variables.

Too often, a user will become convinced that the problems have to be the software, because the issues only show up in the software. Well, if that software is an NLE program, it is very likely that it is because an NLE will test a computer like no other software type will, even image editors like Photoshop. Editing video is extremely stressful on any computer. The only other programs in that category will be CAD and 3D, but most of those programs are only run on special, dedicated workstation. With a consumer-oriented program, like PrE, one might be trying to run it on all sorts of machines. Care must be taken, and attention paid, to what is required (the "minimum system requirements" are not much help, as they will only allow one to install and launch the software and not really use it. I think that Adobe would be better to double those "minimum system requirements.") A computer that does a great job with an e-mail program, a Web browser and a wordprocessor, may well burst into flames, when trying to edit video, especially something like AVCHD.

Again, thanks for reporting on the Norton 360.

                                    Good luck,

Did i mention that the elements organizer also crashes. Not as frequent as premiere. Photoshop elements is rock solid. Bill maybe you onto something as far as codecs are concerned. I may be wrong as this is all new to me.

                                        Hello,

I just wanted to follow up on the PE8 crashing issue that I mentioned earlier. I forgot to mention that I am using Windows 7 64 bit

I was able to get the software to run perfectly on my system yesterday:)

I did as Bill suggested and opened msconfig and programs that were set to run at startup, disconnected my internet connection and shut off Norton 360 and the firewall.  I must say the performance improvement is now fantastic.  I didn't even have to shut down any services at all.

The PC is now blazing like it should and PE8 opens very quickly unlike with Norton running.

I must say that PE8 is fantastic software now that it is running glitch free.

I hope that his will help others out because I know the frustration of having software crash all the time.

                                        Thanks,

You seem to be a veteran in the forum.  Can you help me with one quick question?

I am recording some video footage for some guitar lessons and when I record the video in PE8, the video records fine, but when I do any type of editing, the video shows artifacts.

Using a Cannon ZR 900 to record directly to PE8 in DV format.

Windows 7 64bit, 2x2 gig dual channel ram, 1TB Western Digital HD 7200RPM

The aspect ratio in PE8 is set the hardware.

The guitar strings don't look normal and when I tried to add some guitar tab in another video track the same thing happens.  Seems like every time a frame changes the things get out of whack.  Everything looks weird.  I was able to import the .avi into Camtasia Studio 6 which has no issues at all.

I must be missing something very basic and would love to fix this so I can get my Guitar videos recorded.

I will check the forum when I have a chance but figured you may be able to help me.

                                              Stephen,

The ZR 900 is a miniDV tape camcorder, and I have a very similar, but earlier model, that performs perfectly.

When you say, "when I record the video in PE8," do you mean, when you Capture from the miniDV tape via FireWire in PrE8?

I have not seen such artifacts from my Captured Canon footage. Is your Project Preset the NTSC (or PAL) DV Preset w/ 48KHz 16-bit Audio?

Are you using only the Optical Zoom, or have you used the Digital Zoom?

Are you doing any Scaling on the Timeline?

Is there a red, or green or no line above the Clips in the Timeline?

Can you post a screen-cap showing the artifacts in the Program Monitor, as that might show someone exactly what is happening and maybe help them come up with some ideas?

Also, how are you viewing in the Program Monitor - is it set to Fit, or 100%? I strongly recommend viewing critically at 100% and then resizing the Program Monitor as is necessary. The Preview is basically an emulation, and not as sharp as the output to DVD will be. The Fit setting Scales the Preview, and does degrade the image a bit in the process.

                                              Good luck,

                                                Still nothing from Adobe

in mean while I downloaded cyberlink Powerproducer 8 which appears to be "more compatible" with win7 64bit. This revealed same results. Also crashes on start up.

Taking my thinking a little further I recalled downloading google earth - ran the isntallation - NOTHING ! No google earth on my system.

                                                Considering

                                                Premiere elements 8 crashes

                                                Powerproducer 8 crashes

google is non exsistent on my system

I can only conclude the problem lies with win 7 64bit

I have contact MS locally as well as my hardware supplier.

MS is yet to return to me

Supplier is willing to bomb the system and reinstall win7

                                                holding my breath!

A-I captured video directly from the camcorder with a firewire connection ot the PC, not from  previously recorded material.

Q-I have not seen such artifacts from my Captured Canon footage. Is your Project Preset the NTSC (or PAL) DV Preset w/ 48KHz 16-bit Audio?

A-NTSC 4:3 ratio 720x480 Interlaced frames which was the default when I opened PRE8.

Q-Are you using only the Optical Zoom, or have you used the Digital Zoom?

A-I did not change any zoom options and used the default zoom.

Q-Are you doing any Scaling on the Timeline?

A-After the video was recorded I dragged it to the timeline.

Q-Is there a red, or green or no line above the Clips in the Timeline?

A-No. Maybe I should have said the video plays back a bit blurry but when I stop on any frame, it looks very clear.  The guitar strings change colors slightly and blur while playing a video.

Q-Can you post a screen-cap showing the artifacts in the Program Monitor, as that might show someone exactly what is happening and maybe help them come up with some ideas?

A-I will try and do this tonight.

Q-Also, how are you viewing in the Program Monitor - is it set to Fit, or 100%?

A-I have it set to 100%

I strongly recommend viewing critically at 100% and then resizing the Program Monitor as is necessary. The Preview is basically an emulation, and not as sharp as the output to DVD will be. The Fit setting Scales the Preview, and does degrade the image a bit in the process.

Can you send me the settings on the Camcorder and PRE8 that you used?  That would be very helpful and much appreciated.

                                                  Thanks

Unfortunately, I do not have PrE 8. When I Capture from my ZR70MC, I use either PrPro 2.0's Capture Module, or use SceneAlyzer Live. My Project Preset, which determines my Capture, is set to NTSC DV Standard (4:3) 48KHz 16-bit (camera is set to this, as well), yielding a DV AVI Type II file w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. Everything is very sharp, and there is little color fringing on fine details. That part is dependent on mainly the camera's lens and the sensors. Later on in the workflow, the dependency will go to the MPEG-2 Transcoding to Burn the DVD. The bit-rate of that Transcode can be very important, especially with higher motion (camera, or subject), and can be altered a bit, with the Quality setting (in PrE), or by the bit-rate settings (PrPro and/or Encore, my authoring program). Sorry that I do not have a direct comparison for you, as I have both a slightly different (older) camera and use PrPro (or SceneAlyzer Live) to do the physical Capture. However, the Project Preset (you may have shot 16:9, instead of my 4:3, but that should make no difference), should be identical.

Good luck, and I hope that the screen-cap will show exactly what you are seeing, so that others might pick up something to help.

Sorry that you had to invoke extreme measures with the laptop, but hope that all goes well with the desktops.

Editing video on a laptop is always a challenge. I spent as much on my laptop, as most do on their desktop systems, but configured it just for video-editing. To date, it has performed very well, and even with monster Projects in PrPro (now up to 9 hours, and many 1000 Assets). Though I have a 3x 200GB SATA II internal I/O system, I do use FW-800 externals, as I usually migrate Projects between my workstation and my laptop. This has worked perfectly for about 2 years.

Only times that I have had PrE (PrE 4 in my case) crash, has been when a simple Project got a bit large, AND I broke my own rule about following the tips in my Clean, Lean, Mean Editing Machine article, and left background "stuff" running, plus a couple of browser tabs, and similar open and running. I knew better, but figured that I'd get in, and out, without banging my head on the "ceiling." In those three cases, I was wrong. In all the rest, I edited and closed out, and experienced no issues. I did run into one other problem, that was not a crash, per se, but a real "slow-down." In a fit of laziness and stupidity, I Imported a dozen WMV files, for a quick edit. I did not convert, as I know I should, and as I tell everyone to do. The laptop ground almost to a halt. OK, I thought, I'll just grab the external and go to the workstation to finish this off. Wrong! Even the workstation was as sluggish as a snake in freezing weather. At least it was reinforced in my mind, that heavily compressed Assets, if you have enough of them and their Duration is long enough, will bring even a workstation to its knees, due to the extreme amount of processing involved. Convert, convert, convert! I knew better, and broke my own rules, due to being a lazy sot. Sometimes, one has to learn to practice what they preach. This example reinforced that to me.

Now, in my case, I am dealing with SD Projects, and usually straight-forward DV-AVI files, so things are not that tough on my programs, or on my computers. Add HD, longer Durations, CODEC's that require much processing, and the hardware becomes much more important. Even though each of my computers was "state-of-the-art," the day they were delivered, when I move to HD, I will be replacing each with a new and improved monster machine, each designed for video-editing.

You are ahead of me on this, and I hope that the new machines do all that you require.

                                                        Happy editing, and good luck,
