    Gripes about CS5

    BrianatArena Community Member

Here’s my rant about illustrator. I was hoping CS5 would have addressed these issues, but didn’t – so here goes my suggestions for CS6. Probably sounds like I’m coming off like a jerk but I mean these with respect, just don’t have the time to make them sound happy. Sorry if some of these have been addressed and I’m too ignorant to research it. (maybe you can reply with “look it up *******” to let me know if CS5 actually did improve it)

Adding a layer effect, please remove (or at least make it optional) the preview checkbox. It’s a nuisance to have to check this every time I adjust an effect. Or at least an option to set the default to always checked would be nice.

Artboard names should be applicable in the print window. Print window still refers to artboards by page numbers and it is difficult to single out individual pages to print. Maybe if when the print command is initiated, there is an option to “print active artboard” – just like how save for web conveniently saves the active artboard. I know there is a small preview window, which is a little help, but would still be nice to see artboard names somewhere in the window.

Artboard borders are black, which disappear if there are black artwork elements behind the artboard boarder. Can the borders become an inverted color, or something, so they become visible in such a scenario? Furthermore, can there be an option to hide/show/clip all artwork that overflows the artboards?

Artboard snapping. Suggest doing away with fractional pixel coordinates for artboards. It is a nuisance to draw an artboard and have its dimensions 800.05 pixels wide. Maybe this is useful to somebody, so maybe an option to turn snapping on/off.

When the color picker window is open, it would be nice to have the eyedropper active in the background.

When a new document is created, let’s get rid of the unnecessary default symbols, graphic styles, and swatches. It just creates useless clutter.

Allow the layer effects options window to access the swatch libraries or eyedropper tool when selecting the color of drop shadows and glows etc.

Have the character panel show font previews next to the font name, like PhotoShop does.

Pathfinder: If you unife two objects that do not intersect it just groups them. In CS3 it actually made a compound path – I liked it better when it did that. If I want them grouped I’ll use the group command. The way unite works now makes complex operations a hassle.

What about a red wavy line under misspelled words?

      Have a gread day!

You can do that for yourself by saving your own Document Startup profiles. See: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/322/322398.html which shows how to change the default font, but can also be used for whatever changes you want in the profile.

Just hold down Opt/alt when clicking the pathfinder button.

Try bringing these things up in general discussions instead of Feature Requests. There is a lot more activity there.
