Fireworks source .png not opening from Dreamweaver

    Garry Bradley Level 1

      Hi

Would there be any reason why an image placed into Dreamweaver CS5 won't open the relevant .png file for editing in Fireworks CS5?

All the preferences are set up correctly in both apps and it even jumps into FW when the edit button is clicked but the image doesn't open. I remember in the previous version CS4 it worked correctly with the 'Done' button ready to click after the changes and that then took you back to DW. Maybe I need to reset the preferences.

I'm using the Mac version of CS5 by the way for reference.

Check the source path in the the Dreamweaver Properties panel. Maybe it's linked to the wrong image, or can't find the source file at the designated path.

Hi Jim, thanks for the reply.

That was the first thing I thought of and it was linked correctly, it just won't open. I've tried in all the websites I've designed and none of them open the source .png file even after reselecting it. I also tried dumping the preferences and resetting the app links to no success.

I had a look at the same site in DW4 and that opened FW4 with the right image no problem. I wonder what's going on here?

Hmm, I'm on a Mac, and can't reproduce the issue. I opened a web page, selected a graphic in the web page and chose the Edit icon. The original PNG of the design opened without a hitch.

Have you tried opening the file directly in FW CS5? Just curious if there's an issue with the file as far as CS5 is concerned.

Yes the file's fine Jim, it opens without a problem.

Just done some testing and this is what I've found. It's an inline style with a null link that stops it from opening. If you look at the code that I have for a little bit that doesn't work.

As soon as I remove the online styling (below) it works and all the images placed on the page open fine in FW

Have I discovered a bug here or something silly I've done?

Yes Jim. I had some CSS styling and I just wanted to change one row of type to a smaller case without creating a separate rule. So I highlighted it and created this inline style.

Apologies if it's gone into the world of Dreamweaver in a Fireworks forum but these two are inter-related.

Yeah, it's apparent the FW can't/won't support the layout with the additional code. For some reason, FW must be having difficulty with that code.

Generally, I've found that if I update the design in DW, Fireworks warns me that the layouts don't match, but at least the file opens.

If you want to pass the file onto me, I'll see if I can push it further up the chain. I can't promise anything, but I'll try.

Thanks for all the help here Jim, I think I'll be fine though. It's not stopping me from carrying on with the project I'm doing but it was good to tell you about it in case it was relevant to a bug fix down the line.

I've just updated from Fireworks CS3 to Fireworks CS5 and am having the very same issue with source Fireworks files not opening from Dreamweaver.

When I'm in Dreamweaver and I select an image and then click the "Edit" button in the properties panel, Fireworks will launch, but the source .png will NOT open.

I have the site definition set properly in DW, and the link to the source .png (from the Root) is correct. I've also made sure Fireworks is set to the Primary editor in the DW preferences. I even deleted my personal Configuration to set things back to installation defaults, but to no avail.

In the Fireworks CS5 "Launch and Edit" preferences I've also made sure to set "Always Use Source PNG".

This is a frustrating problem and is certainly slowing down my production since I rely on it ALL the time! In CS3 it just worked.

I have had the same problem.  There is definitely a bug with Fireworks CS5 when it comes to round tripping.

I used it all the time with CS3.  I paste the Fireworks HTML into the page in Dreamweaver, but it does not

set the source to the png correctly.  Even if I use the Point to File icon to set the source, it never gets it

right.  When I click on the Edit button, it can't find the file.  Even if I browse to the png and open it in

Fireworks then hit the Done button, it does not update the web page.  It worked 100's of times with CS3.

I asked this question a couple of weeks ago, and nobody answered it.  Why does round tripping not work

with CS5???  I now do it manually.  I right-click on the png file in the Files panel and choose Edit with

Fireworks.  I make the changes and save them then I re-export the files.  This works about the same as

round tripping, but I thought the automated Done button was so cool.   There is either a bug with CS5 or

the correct procedure for doing this with CS3 has changed.  I am not a Mac user; I am a PC user.

Does anyone know the solution to this problem????

More specifics would be helpful. "It doesn't work" isn't enough. What's happening to the path? What should it be campared to what result you're getting? Do  you get the same result if you export HTML and Images, rather than pasting the html into an existing Dreaweaver page?

I gave a lot more information in my original post:

                                http://forums.adobe.com/message/2944887#2944887

As requested, here are more details on "the path doesn't work":

When I export a png in Fireworks to Dreamweaver it does not set the source

file correctly.  It places the Fireworks object on the page, but when I select the table

that holds the Fireworks object, the path for the source on the Properties panel is

wrong - it says menu2.png.  The correct document relative path is dress_images/menu2/menu2.png.

When I drag the Point to File icon over to the menu2.png on the Files panel, it displays the correct

path, but when I let go of the mouse, it sets the path back to menu2.png.  I can not

even type the path in the source box and get it to stay.  It automatically changes it.

Here is the problem.  When I click on the Edit button, it says it can't find the png.   If I browse to

the png file and open it in Fireworks then click the Done button, it saves the png file but none of

the changes are reflected on the page.

Fireworks and Dreamweaver CS3 worked perfectly here.  Help!

I just tried to do this on another computer.  This time when I pasted the Fireworks HTML onto the

page in Dreamweaver, it set the path correctly (it was a root relative path instead of a document

relative path).  I tried to edit in Fireworks using the Edit button, and it opened Fireworks without

any problem.  I made some changes then clicked the Done button.  Now the Done button is suppose

to be like magic.  It is suppose to save the changes to the png file, make the changes on the HTML

page in Dreamweaver, and change any of the supporting files (images) that have been edited.  It

always worked this way in CS3, and anything less than this would be a huge step backwards.  In this

case, it saved the changes to the png, but did not make any other changes.  The web page in

Dreamweaver is still the same.  How do I get the Done button to work its magic using CS5?

Another problem - when I paste the code onto the page, the page looks totally messed up.  If I save it

and reopen it then it looks fine.

You also asked about exporting and pasting.

I have tried both and get the same results.  Here is the technique I used for pasting:

I saved the png file in a subfolder named menu in the root folder.  I then exported using Fireworks.  I

set it to export both HTML and images, and I set it to copy the HTML code to the clipboard.  I then

exported to the same folder where I put the png.  I then returned to Dreamweaver, and right-clicked on

the page where I wanted this Fireworks object to go and chose Paste Fireworks HTML.  This worked

100's of times with CS3 and the Edit button would always work correctly.  On my original post, I was

told I could not paste, so I used the other technique.  Here is what I did:

I saved the png file in a subfolder inside my root folder.  I exported the Fireworks object, but this time

I selected to export HTML and images (same as before) but instead of copying it to the clipboard I

chose the other option.  I exported to the same folder as the png.  This places all the images slices and

suporting files as well as an HTML page in the menu folder.  I then returned to Dreamweaver then clicked

on the page where I wanted the Fireworks object to go.  I used the menu at the top and went to Insert ->

Images -> Fireworks Object, then when the box popped open, I navigated to the location in the menu

folder where the HTML file had been exported and selected it.  Once again, it correctly put the object on the

page, but once again, round tripping had the same problems that occurred with pasting. This method always

worked 100% of the time with CS3.

After trying to get this to work on several different computers and trying several different fixes, I decided

that the Edit / Done round tripping does not work in CS5.  I have read two or three other posts on this

                                board with the same issue.

Here is the answer to your last question "Are you on Windows?"

I am using a Windows PC with Windows XP as the operating system.

Thank you for any help you can give.

                                    Hi Jim

Continuing this theme of Fireworks not opening files from Dreamweaver I've run into this problem again on my Mac under CS5. I've been creating HTML emails that require inline styles and no CSS files.

I created a new blank file and place a GIF of a logo into DW that created in FW. So far so good, clicking the round trip button jumps me into FW with the 'Done' button as I expect. Now I put some text into the page which is obviously unformatted at this stage, the logo is still 'roundtrippable'. If I put an inline style onto the text line which puts the <span> tag around it, clicking the roundtrip doesn't work any more.

It seems just by putting a simple inline style around some text breaks the graphic opening the original PNG. It actually jumps into FW but stops there. Can you reproduce it? If you can't I'll have to assume my Mac running 10.6.4 is doing something weird here.

Hope we can find out what's doing this, it's getting tedious.

Basically, it sounds like you're doing things which FW - rightly or wrongly - can't handle. Round trip is essentially for table-based (ugh) layouts or single images. Adding spans is something that FW doesn't know how to handle. So it's stopping. Are you selecting the image first and then choosing Edit With... from the context menu or just clicking on the Edit icon in the Properties panel? If you're clicking the edit button, FW may be trying to deal with the entire page, rather than just the image.

I thing that the  Roundtrip aspect of Fireworks needs to "catch up" with some of FW's newer features.

After selecting the image the using Edit With... from the context menu or just clicking on the Edit icon in the Properties panel the outcome's the same, jumps to FW and doesn't open the graphic.

What I have found out is that if I specify the the inline <span> text size as 'small', 'medium' or 'large', or any of the in between 'xx' settings instead of, say, 12 px, it works! Do you think it only works with the absolute HTML definitions only?

I've honestly never delved that deep into it; I don't round-trip all that often and it's generally worked when I've done it. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Just popping in to add my request that this bug be fixed. I hope Adobe is listening.  It is really quite annoying.  At least I know that I'm not alone in this issue and that there is a workaround.
