sorry: "Illustrator" ...no 3rd "L" is necessary...
Check for image resolution. If the dpi is too high or too low it might affect the rendering in Illustrator. Ideal would be anything between 72 to 300 dpi.
Try embedding the image instead of placing. It should then allow Live Trace and expansion.
WHEN I OPEN THE "LINKS" DROP DOWN MENU, the embed function isn't highlighted
and won't let me select it to embed. I tried with a .psd AND a .png...it
must have a transparent background...I think this is ridiculous that this
software can do so much...and yet this is like pulling teeth!
resolution was 300 - I don't think this is the issue...any other ideas? the
embed suggestion didn't work either - this should be a no-brainer...I am
Can you post a copy of the file you are trying to use to something like yousendit for us to look at. I have no trouble placing either a .psd or a .png file in an AI file and then running Live Trace. It doesn't need to be embedded (my mistake).
Could you tell me the tracing options? Maybe I am making a mistake
there...unfortunately, I can't post the artwork...but I think if I have your
settings, I might be OK.
I really appreciate it - thank you!!
I tried several different both in color and B/W. You can choose to Ignore White (Tracing Options dialog, right side as well as choose strokes instead of fills). Just play around. Another thing, did you expand the Live Trace after it was done?
As I wrote - we have 'played around' for days now...I am disappointed - I
thought this bundle had no limits...this is a very simple expectation...
This should be a preset with a big red button...you shouldn't have to search
Thanks for your effort nonetheless.
Live Trace in Illustrator is a very powerful feature. With your image selected, you should see the Live Trace button in the Control panel & clicking on the arrow next to it, you should see the following:
You can choose from these different presets or open the Tracing Options dialog to customize how you want to trace your image.
Hope this helps.

Well, that would suggest the external linked file cannot be found, so you are only seeing a screen-res preview in the AI file. Does the Links palette display a question mark? If so, you have either deleted the linked image, or moved either it or the AI file, or changed a folder name in the directory path to the image, or the image was placed across a network and the network link is not available.
... think this is ridiculous that this software can do so much...and yet this is like pulling teeth!....this should be a no-brainer...I am shocked.
There's plenty to complain about in Illustrator's interface, but in this case, it sounds like you're simply dealing with a misplaced external link--if so, you'd have the same problem in any program, and--not to put too fine a point on it--the need to maintain the directory path to externally linked files is pretty much a no-brainer.
it doesn't because I have tried every scenario and it is still pixelated - I
just can't comprehend this - this should be a BIG RED BUTTON!
