Curt Y Jun 4, 2010 8:25 AM (in response to captain1944)It really depends on how large of images you intend to run, how many you have open, and what type of techniques you imploy. For the average user it will work fine at 4 meg.
Photoshop will use all the RAM you can throw at it.
But if you have a 64 bit OS seems a waste to use only 4 meg. If you have a 32 bit system the OS will only recognize 3.3 meg.

Marian Driscoll Jun 4, 2010 9:13 AM (in response to Curt Y)You two are showing your age.
I'm sure we meant GB and not MB.

Noel Carboni Jun 4, 2010 9:18 AM (in response to captain1944)More is better and a lot more is a lot better. But you can certainly work with 4 GB. If you couldn't, the 32 bit version would be useless.
Marian, hilarious!

Curt Y Jun 4, 2010 9:18 AM (in response to Marian Driscoll)Got me! My first computer had 64 K,
and yes that is in 64 thousand. It still works however.

Marian Driscoll Jun 4, 2010 9:24 AM (in response to Curt Y)I guess I'm older at 16 KB.
I'm looking forward when we are even more confused over TB of RAM.

Noel Carboni Jun 4, 2010 9:32 AM (in response to Curt Y)To be fair, my very first computer was not really mine - it was an IBM 370 mainframe that took up 2 floors in a big building. When microcomputers were invented I got a Sol-20 8080 system with 2K bytes of monitor memory, 1K of which was the 16 x 64 screen. Later I built a memory board with 2102 RAMs (1024 x 1 bit) to bring it up to a whopping 8K bytes, then after that a newer tech board with a full 64K bytes (that took dusting off some old memories to get the details right). I remember getting CP/M to work with some big ol' 8" floppy disk drives.

Only major problems with that Sol-20 system are that 1) it's been packed in a case in the closet for a looong time because it's useless except as a curiosity, and 2) The Cherry keyboard simply collapsed (the little foam pads degraded).
I checked... The computer museum already has one. Can't bring myself to part with it though.

Pretty much like work deficits now. Just a few years ago it was billions that were talked about, now it is trillions.
