Try tis code, change it to adjust it to your needs:
Okay...thank you very much, I'll check it out now!
What exactly is _root. Ive googled the term and kind find out exactly what it is or how to define it...
PS - I pressed send too fast.
I was going to say that _root is a 'global' movie property that can be used
anywhere as a reference to the main timeline, or movie clip. But I'd
recommend against its use, as when you get into more complex projects it
will get you in trouble. Personally, it's like the granny ring on a mountain
bike for me, I haven't used it in years and I'd do away with it if I could.

Well I think it depends on the developer. I you need to use it, just use it. If you now how to handle _root it is ok too. It depends on the application, the things you are trying to do, etc.
I am a Flash programmer myself for 8 years and I still use _root. Not all the time but for some simple applications. I have learn to deal with its drawbacks and tricks.
And, well ... this is just an example. Don't think its like sooo critic the differentiation.
Besides, to make that code AS 3 compatible, not only _root must dissapear but the event handlers must be written a lot different. That is, code will need to be rewritten completely.
There is no way doing long applications that are AS 2 and AS 3 compatible at the same time. The structure between both is a lot different.
