1. Re: IDCS5 - Tracking problem and saving window size problem
BobLevine Jun 6, 2010 8:25 AM (in response to Big Jimm)1. You'd need to turn off the paragraph composer. Not a very good plan, IMO. You'd be better off with judicious use of no break.
Can't really help with the second issue since I've never seen it.

[Jongware] Jun 6, 2010 8:27 AM (in response to Big Jimm)Ad #1: InDesign is a smart program, by design. It does not lay out text one line at a time; rather, it considers the overall spacing of the entire paragraph, and adjusts line breaks to keep the spacing consistent over every line.
If that bothers you because it interferes with manual tinkering, you can always opt to use the "Line Composer", rather than "Paragraph Composer". But -- especially in narrow columns -- it will certainly give a worse "overall" result. The Paragraph Composer is written to avoid this.

Regarding “Can’t save the document size.”
Just wondering are either, or both, of you using a Mac?

Big Jimm Jun 7, 2010 5:54 AM (in response to Big Jimm)BOB!!!
I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE APPLICATION FRAME WAS “NOT” TURNED ON!!!!!!!!!!
WHEN I TURNED ON APPLICATION FRAME, THAT TOTALLY FIXED IT!!!!!
That window size problem has driven me crazy. And, I've felt so stupid repeating it over and over.
I'm so happy now! At 80, the “thousands“ of hours I spent talking to the Indian techs, made me feel like 90! (And, that, you should never want). I never changed the Application Frame since install. In fact, I didn’t even know what, or where, it was. So, the other setting must come as the default setting.
I don’t know if you work for Adobe or not, but if not, they should pay you big time! Can you believe that after ALL the Adobe techs I talked to, not one mentioned Application Frame?
So, now I'm lovin IDCS5 .. and this forum. By the way, I really like automatic guides that pop up and help with centering.
THANKS A MILLION, BOB!!!

BobLevine Jun 7, 2010 6:01 AM (in response to Big Jimm)After a weekend of yard work in brutal heat and humidity, I feel like 90, too...but I digress.
The application frame mimics the behavior of applications on Windows so you won't see through to the desktop, but for me, it was one of the big selling points when added in CS4.

Don Norman (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=psychology+of+things+don+norman) notes that it's common for people to blame themselves when frustrated by working with stuff that doesn't work as expected, is poorly designed, or insufficiently documented.
Regardless of age, no matter what's behind it, it is TOO EASY to blame oneself in situations like this.
Now that you're in awe of Bob, it's a good time to take a suggestion to heart that he and others here have made many times, and get a copy of Sandee Cohen's InDesign CS4 Visual Quickstart Guide from the public library, until you can buy the CS5 version that's due out soon. Things like the Application Frame are well-covered; actually, there's almost nothing that's overlooked.
Regarding the frustration with tech support: Well, it's not really Adobe tech support, it's a subcontractor's tech support. And it's not that the techs are not US folks, either. The issue is that the techs have limited experience and training with the products they support. Often, the subcontractor's agents are required to support multiple products from multiple companies (not just Adobe.) It's often helpful to insist on talking with the highest-level manager available, so you can insist on getting to a tech with sufficient expertise to understand resolve your problem; be sure to demand a case number when you first make contact with a tech, so there's a trail for your case.
I haven't seen it mentioned before, so either I'm really slow, or this is my original idea: use Adobe's feature request form at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform to request better-skilled support techs. Seriously! Support is a product feature; if it's not working well, Adobe should be told.
These forums are provided by Adobe, but all participants are unpaid user-volunteers. OK, so there are some Adobe employees who pop in periodically, out of personal commitment to helping the community of users; although they're not acting as official company participants, their information and suggestions are as official as it gets.
HTH
Regards,
Peter
