    quadro 3800 vs geforce 480

    BoomPowAwesomeWow

Hello all! I'm currently building a new editing rig. It will primarily be used for Premiere Pro, but I will also do quite a bit of animation through illustrator and AE. I've pretty much settled on all the hardware, but the video card is giving me a hassle. I want to take advantage of NVidia's new CUDA technology and the Mercury Playback Engine. Therefore, I've narrowed it down to two choices: geforce 480 or quadro 3800.

I realize that the 480 isn't yet supported by adobe, but from all I've seen and read, I can softmod it till support arrives in Q3. My other option is to go for the quadro 3800, which I can swing price-wise, but only if it's worth it. The 3800 seems to be aging and I'd hate to pump money into a card that might be in it's last days.

Can anyone tell me what advantages there will be to grab a 3800 over the 480? According to the CUDA scores the 480 is higher (480 over 192), but the 3800's clock speed and memory is much higher. My biggest concern is whether this is worth the price jump ($300) or would my money be better spent elsewhere (higher clocked cpu/higher ram)? It's hard to find a good comparison of the two cards, since many seem to think workstation vs graphic cards are apples and oranges, but this CUDA tech seems to be closing that gap.

      Thanks for the help!

      Here's my preliminary hardware list:

Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

      Processor: Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz 8 MB LGA1366

      RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

      HDD: 2 x Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s

      PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650HX 750W ATX12V v2.2/EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready

          Hi

          I have a quadro fx5800 & a GTX 480

The 480 is a great card for the price.

Till now, everybody is guessing, because there is no comparison material available. I have chosen the 480 and hope that the extra cores will pay off in performance.

According to the CUDA scores the 480 is higher (480 over 192), but the 3800's clock speed and memory is much higher.

The 3800 clock speed is much LOWER than the 480. Spec wise the 480 is the clear winner on all fronts.

I would use the savings of not buying the 3800 but the 480 to remove your system bottleneck by getting some additional disks. Only 2 HDD's is a serious bottleneck, and do check your PSU if you decide on the 480. 750 W looks marginal.

I completely agree with Harm and Baz.  If I were you and had that ~$300 and could wait for a short while I would go with one of the new WD VelociRaptor 600 GB drives for the OS and applications. With the new 32 MB of cache and apparently higher density (faster read and write rates) it should be even better than the old suggested OS drive (WD VelociRaptor 150 GB).
