Please provide the exact specs you use for rendering, what the source files contain as well as what tools you use for playback. Defunct TC points to framerate mismatches due to incorrectly interpreted footage and render settings. Could also point to audio issues. If you use CoDecs and formats that don't persistently store TCs, your player may simply calculate it wrongly.
My composition is HDTV 1080 29.97, and it's all graphical. No imported video footage. There are a few imported illustrator files, and the rest is made in AE. I've exported to Windows Media HDTV 1080 29.97, MPEG 2 DVD NTSC Widescreen 29.97, h.264 Blu-Ray HDTV 1080p 29.97, as well as AVI, FLV and MPEG.
For playback, I've used Windows Media Player, VLC Player, Media Player Classic and MagicInfo-i Player. There is no audio in this project either.
Thanks for your help.
First, let's define your output flow: are you "exporting" or are you "rendering?"
I've noticed this same issue. Unfortunately, the render will take 4 to 5 hours to finish just to find out your file has issues. I render my comp to uncompressed avi files and noticed 2 things. One, footage is shorter then it should be. I know this because when I reload it into the Sony Vegas time line the end is cut off. Second, I get frames randomly that are black through out the video. Not realy sure why. Just thought I would put my 2 cents in.
