How do I separate cmyk color for 3 color silkscreening?

I have created a file in cmyk (purchased clipart came that way) which is going to be silkscreened on a product. This will not be printed in 4 cmyk colors, but 3 solid colors which I need to separate for the printer, and also for my own use (client wants to see other color combinations). Usually I just select color range and put each selection on a different layer, but when I did it there was a faint trace of the background that remained and I don't know how to get rid of it. Is there some way to easily create solid color separations from this file?  Attached is a small portion. Thanks for your help!Picture 2.png
